The purpose of this thesis is to compare between Korean and Sinhala tenses for sri lankan Students when learning Korean language. As there ha not been anby research on Comparative studies on Sinhala and korean tenses written in Korean before, this thesis will mark the beginning of linguistics comparison research between Sinhala and korean tenses.
The first chapter explains the objectives of this thesis and the method followed during the study and explanation of preceding researches on tenses. As it will also focus on the contrastive study on the tenses and aspect of Korean and russian by I De Ok and the study on the tenses and aspect of Korean by Kim Yeong Ook.
The second chapter introduces the Sinhala language. It is divided into three special categories, phonological characteristics, morphological characteristics and grammatical characteristics.
The third chapter of this thesis explains the system of tenses in both sinhala and Korean language. In the case of Korean, it was classified in two categories. The first one is trichotomy classification, which describes the pat, present and future tenses.
The second one is dichotomy classification which is about past and non past tenses.
Also, chapter three explains the concept of absolute and relative tenses.
Moreover, it explains the system of Sinhala tenses.
The fourth chapter explains the similarities and differences between Sinhala and Korean tenses.
In the similarities, the trichotomy classification (past, present and future) and dichotomy classification (past and non past) of both languages are explained.
Then, to explain about the differences, it was divided into three categories.
These are termination form, modifier form and relative tense.
The fifth chapter, analyzes the survey.
The target of the survey were 50 3rd year students majoring in Korean language at Kelaniya University.
through this survey the errors were analyzed that sri lanka students make when using Korean tenses.
Then, the result of this questionnaire was divided into three categories.
These are termination from error, modifier form error and relative tense error.
Also, another survey was applied to 20 students of the Korean language department at Jeonju University.
After analyzing this survey, the results helped to compare with rhe error usage that Sri Lankan students made when using Korean tenses.
Moreover, the fifth chapter discusses the point that need special attention for preventing errors.
Based on the survey results, it suggests how to correct tense errors.
First, it is suggested to teach the Korean tenses by using Sinhala colloquial style.
Second, it presents a teaching plan for elementary level and intermediate level in order to prevent errors when using Korean tenses.
in the advance levels, it is suggests a teaching plan forced on a methodology to move from trichotomy classification to dichotomy classification when teaching Korean tenses.
In conclusion, the researcher hopes the present and analysis results will be helpful to Sri Lankan students when studying Korean tenses, As well as applying the suggested points will be helpful to teachers to when presenting Korean tenses.
