This study aims to review the status concerning Chinese speaker' pronunciation of Korean intermediate tones. It intends to understand the concept of Korean intermediate tones, the tricky intermediate tones for Chinese speaker of Korean language and the reasons they have their pronunciation errors through an experimental research.
In order to figure out the status concerning Chinese speaker' pronunciation of Korean intermediate tones, a vocabulary reading test in terms of intermediate tones was performed for the total of 45 including beginners, intermediate and advanced learners considering their Korean fluency.
Through some experiments, the aspects of Chinese speaker' Korean intermediate tones could be reviewed. First, according to the result of intermediate tone's glottalization, beginners, intermediate and advanced learners individually showed 72%, 33% and 32% of error rate. Second, it was revealed from the result of intermediate tone's nasalization, beginners, intermediate and advanced learners revealed 100%, 95% and 86% separately. Third, according to the result of intermediate tone's exceptional vocabulary, beginners, intermediate and advanced learners indicated 13%, 38% and 36% each.
Judging from the levels of Korean fluency, the error rate of intermediate tones from the beginners to the advanced learners has decrease for sure. However, though the error rate has significantly reduced according to the result shown from the beginners to the intermediate learners, but the result indicated from the intermediate learners to the advanced learners has not revealed considerable changes of the error rate. If this is the case, it can be called a fossilized phenomenon.
And it was confirm that the trickiest intermediate tones for all the levels of students are pronunciations of intermediate tone's nasalization. It was also revealed that the most difficult words for the subjects were 깻잎(sesame), 나뭇잎(leaf), 뒷일(aftermath), 노랫말(lyrics), 빗물(rainwater), etc. In addition, the three error types shown in case of the pronunciations of intermediate tone's glottalization are "pronouncing without the application of a phonological rule","pronouncing without inserting an intermediate tone" and "pronouncing ㅅ as /ㄷ/ by incorrectly applying a phonological rule". And there are three error types of pronunciation of intermediate tone's nasalization, "pronouncing incorrectly by using prolonged sound with a subsequent syllable", "pronouncing by incorrectly applying a phonological rule" and "pronouncing without inserting an intermediate tone". In particular, it was indicated that there were mainly two types, "pronouncing without the application of a phonological rules" and "pronouncing without inserting an intermediate tone". It was possible to understand about the exact severity of Chinese speaker' pronunciation of Korean intermediate tones.
