The purpose of the study is to suggest a standard for assessment and intervention by phonetically analyzing the vowel pronunciation of the children from the Chinese-Korean families.
The subjects were 20 children(average age of 7 years and 9 months) from the Chinese-Korean families edly without no diphthong problems and 20 children(average age of 7 years and 6 months) from the Korean families. The vowels to be tested were /i, ɛ, ɑ, u/ and the children phonated them for 3 seconds for the purpose of recording.
Two types of analysis were used : acoustic and perceptual. In order to phonetically analyze the vowels, Praat was used. The vowel space parameters in this study were [Euclidean Distance between vowels, vowel triangle area, vowel quadrilateral area, FCR(formant centralization ratio), VAI(vowel articulation index), F2-ratio, and the apex angle of the vowel triangle].
The results of the phonetical analysis were as follows : first, the two groups showed a statistically meaningful difference in F2 and 우, which indicates the tongue location difference before and after pronouncing /u/, hinting at some influence from the Chinese language from a parent; second, because the children group from the Chinese-Korean families show a certain degree of going back and upwards in the 우 vowel space, the Euclidean Distance between /ɑ-u/, /i-u/ and /ɛ-u/ was longer; third, the vowel quadrilateral areas consisting of /i-ɛ-ɑ-u/ of the two groups also showed a meaningful difference; and forth, in F2-ratio, the vowel location before and after pronouncing /u/ also resulted in a meaningful difference between the two.
The results of the perceptual analysis were as follows : under the reliability test among the appraisers where the reliability of the appraisers by other appraisers were asked on the basis of meaningful results, the single measure of ICC(intraclass correlation coefficient) was found out to be under 0.3, the conclusion of which is no significant difference.
Thus, it may be said that the statistically meaningful difference does exist between the two subject groups in case of the 우 vowel in terms of acoustic parameters, but the difference is not as huge as to cause perceptual difference. The result leads to a potential conclusion that the linguistic ability(Korean) of the children from the Chinese-Korean families is on the similar, if not the same, level when compared to their counterparts with Korean parents.
