A Study on Korean Traditional Holiday Culture Education for Married Immigrants: Based on the Integrated Model Lessons of Project-Based Learning and Inquiry Learning
Culture is the product generated from human life and animatedly internalized in individuals and the entire race. It is a resource that helps people communicate with one another and ethnic groups interact with one another. Accordingly, if one fails to understand other ethnic groups’ culture at a time of ethnic exchange, it results in problems in communication, which causes conflicts and severed ethnic exchanges.
As the global community enters the era of internationalization, ethnic groups began conducting meaningful exchanges for the purpose of being united, and each and every ethnic group is carrying out their mission to disseminate their own language and culture. Korea does not hold fast to a single-race nation any longer while making every effort to accept multiple cultures and share experiences.
Going along the atmosphere, many foreigners visiting Korea are showing enthusiasm to learn Korean. However, if one fails to understand culture at a time of learning a foreign language, he or she cannot truly communicate with native speakers. Accordingly, foreigners desiring to live in Korea need to know about Korean culture. Of the foreigners, married immigrants who raise a family in Korea need to adapt to the Korean culture as a member of the Korean race, so cultural education for them is desperately needed. Against this backdrop, the study was focused on stressing the importance of cultural education for married immigrants and suggesting ways to provide cultural education in addition to cultural teaching and learning methods.
As to the learning and teaching methods, a teacher-directed approach and a lesson-delivery approach need to be refrained. For the purpose of effective cultural learning, the contents of learning need to be accepted and internalized in a scientific and logical way based on a learner-directed approach and an experience-oriented approach. In this regard, the study viewed project-based learning as a learner-directed approach and considered inquiry learning as a scientific and logical approach for the purpose of developing an integrated model lesson of project-based learning. This learning method is expected to pave the way for achievement of cultural educational objectives for married immigrants.
The contents of cultural education were concentrated on Korean traditional holiday culture in consideration of urgent problems facing married immigrants obligated to fulfill their roles as a principal agent of their family. Accordingly, the study aimed at designing teaching and learning methods and verifying the effectiveness, which leads to effective education on Korean traditional holiday culture for married immigrants.
Research classes were given to 12 married immigrants at an advanced level of Korean language course for 7 weeks from January 6, 2015 to February 28, 2015 in a multicultural center located in Gyeonggi-do. As a result of analyses on pre-and-post assessment on the research classes, it was found out that learners made a significant progress. It suggested that project-based learning and inquiry learning could be effective cultural learning methods. The importance of cultural education for married immigrants cannot be too strongly emphasized, and more research needs to be conducted in the future.
