The study mainly focus on married Chinese female immigrants, the contradiction between the marital conflict , old woman daughter-in-law conflict and depression, overall tendency. And not only intend to find out whether their depression and anxiety have something to do with the marital conflict and the conflict between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law , but also to figure out the relationship between the two negative moods and the two major conflicts, according to their differences on population sociology features.
To do this, we did a questionnaire survey on married Chinese female immigrants who have mother-in-law and live in Gyeonggi-do. Using the SPSS 18.0 program, the data of the 246 samples were analyzed by Reliability, Percentage, Mean, SD, t-test, ANOVA, Duncan test, Correlation analysis.
The main results of the study are as follows:
First, A lower degree of conflicts between husband and wife, the contradictions between mother-in- law and daughter-in-law, depression is the intermediate level, a lower degree of discomfort.
Second, in the population sociology features of married Chinese female immigrants, the age of the mother-in-law, the birth ranking of the husband and whether living with the mother-in-law cause an apparently different influence on the marital conflict, the conflict between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law, depression and anxiety. That is to say, the higher the age of the mother-in-law is, the more the conflicts are and the higher the level of depression and anxiety are. And when the husband is the third son of the family, both of the conflicts and the level of the unpleasant moods come to the top. Additionally, compared to those who don’t live with the mother-in-law, those who do always have more conflicts and higher level of depression and anxiety, What’s more, the results show different according to the length of the marriage. In the first 15 years ,the number of conflicts and the level of depression and anxiety grows with the length of the marriage . But when it comes to the 16thyear or more, all of them become lower. Also, the family income is an important factor. The lower the family income is, the more the marital conflicts are and the higher the feeling of anxiety is. The standard of the ability to speak Korean can also result in different impact, mid-level have more conflicts between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law than others.
Third, married female Chinese immigrants’ conflicts(marital conflict, conflict between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law)and depression are positively related. Especially in the correlativity between the two conflicts and depression, in terms of the action of depression, there appear role conflict, general conflict between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law, cultural conflict, economic problem, husbands’ bad habits, conflict on love and life , problems on sexual life and communication. From the strong-to-weak order of the relationship, we can know that as for the action of anxiety, the conflict between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law is more violence than marital conflict.
The study was carried on with no antecedent study, it is exploratory. The study reveal that ,the higher the age of the mother-in-law is, the more the conflicts are and the higher the level of depression and anxiety are. In addition, those who live with mother-in-law have more conflicts and higher level of depression and anxiety than those who don’t. Moreover, as for the action of anxiety, the conflict between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law is more violence than marital conflict. This conclusion has academic meaning.
Unfortunately, as the study is an exploratory one, it has some restrictions on generalization. The following advice are aimed at the restrictions of the study and further study:
First, the target of the study only limited to married Chinese female immigrants who have mother-in-law and live in Gyeonggi-do. It may be different in other district and married female immigrants from other countries. So it is necessary to broaden the range to more districts and married female immigrants from more countries in further study.
Second, we only focus on the birth ranking of the husband and the age of the mother-in-law, but ignore the general feature like the age of the husband, the education background of the husband, and whether the father-in-law is still alive. And the conflicts and the level of depression and anxiety may change as these general features change. As a result, it is of great importance to take general features of husband and mother-in-law into consideration and analyses in further studies.
