A Study on Korean Metalinguistic Expression
Focused on Korean Language textbook with Corpus Sejong
This study is to define revising, supplementing the discourse components or controlling the progress of communication from a higher level by using metalingual function in a metalinguistic expression. And it analyzed '3 representing integrated textbooks' as well as 'Sejong Corpus' to confirm the trend of metalinguistic expression in Korean language education and conversation between Koreans. Metalinguistic expression refers to the linguistic expression with Meta-phenomena and originally it was initiated in logic and utilized in linguistics but it is also commonly used in actual trend of language usage.
For this purpose, analysis framework was established by using preceding researches and theories and following analyses were performed to take various approaches to the drawn results (frequency).
1. Comparison between Sejong Corpus and textbooks
2. Comparison of forms between items.
3. Comparison between integrated textbooks
4. Comparison by level between integrated textbooks
Regarding number 1, it presented inconsistency with item number 4 among other items in analysis framework. This result was drawn by comparing analyzed results based on actual case. Number 2 was to analyze the diversity of forms by item and item number 12 showed fragmentary form which means supplementing diversity is required. Regarding number 3, it was a trend problem of conversation pattern. In the actual case, short locution was occurred in a frequent repetition while the locution in textbooks was in the form of information reading with exceeding 2 sentences for each person's locution. The highest authenticity was shown in the conversation from intermediate textbook and limitation of educational contents for elementary and advanced textbooks was considered as the reason for this result.
This study was to confirm the authenticity of discourse in the textbooks through analyzing metalinguistic expressions from various approaches. However, there were several limitations as all factors of language usage trend couldn't be understood with Sejong Corpus and only some of regular textbooks instead of all were analyzed.
