A Culture-centered Method on the Integrated Education of Korean Language Utilizing TV Dramas: For Intermediate Learners
The purpose of this study is to present a culture-centered method on the integrated education of Korean Language for intermediate learners who learn Korean in domestic Korean language institutes. Intermediate learners can communicate in Korean in their daily life without too much difficulty and need a deep understanding of Korean culture to achieve higher levels of Korean communication ability. However, their culture classes mostly consists of lectures and weekend field trips. In this kind of classes, students can easily lose their interest in Korean culture and it might lead to the decrease in motivation for learning Korean. Furthermore, it couldn't develop cultural ability of intermediate learners. Therefore, it is required to develop an effective and practical method of teaching culture which can be applied to the classroom.
In this respect, this study designed teaching-learning models in consideration of the three main points: First, it takes advantage of learner's interest in Korean popular culture, which is growing in popularity in other countries. Second, it should be an integrated method of teaching Korean language and culture. Third, it should be practical in the classroom.
Above all, the type of integrated education is selected as a culture-centered method regarding learner variables. To be applied to the classroom for intermediate learners, this study selected the items of Korean culture education by conducting analysis on 6 textbooks for intermediate-level learners. And it chose a TV drama as a means of integrating language and culture education. Using a TV drama as teaching materials in language education provides an opportunity to study the practical language and learn cultural aspects. Besides, it will undoubtedly increase the learners' interest in their Korean language class content and make them participate in their class actively.
This study is meaningful in that it presents more effective and practical teaching-learning methods utilizing TV dramas for intermediate learners. Especially, this study suggested a culture-centered method on the integrated education of Korean Language and showed the integrated teaching-learning examples of Culture and Listening․Speaking, Culture and Writing, Culture and Reading with detailed analysis of TV dramas for intermediate classes.
