This study has objective of providing fundamental data for career education and career education policy making for multicultural family youth after analyzing and verifying the effect of influence of parenting attitude and social support on the career maturity of the youth.
To achieve the objective of this study, the research topic has been determined as below:
1. Are there differences in parenting attitude, social support and career maturity basis of sociodemographic characteristics?
2. Do parenting attitude and social support as perceived by the adolescents from multicultural familities have impact on career maturity?
This study was conducted using the Career Maturity Examination Paper for middle and high school students (Lee Un, Jeong Yun Gyeong, Sang Gyeong Ah, 2001) developed by Korea Research Institute for Vocational Education and Training on 250 multicultural family adolescents aged between 16 and 19 living in Gyeonggi K city and Chungcheongnamdo C city which have relative higher percentage of multicultural family distribution.
For analysis, statistical program SPSS18.0 Package is used, and Frequency analysis, t-test, one-way Anova analysis, LSD(Least Significant Different) multiple regression analysis were conducted and the results are as follows.
For sociodemographic characteristics, female students had higher support from friends and career maturity compared to male students. For age, students younger than 16 years of age has higher social support. Academic performance differed as the adolescents were more aware of the warmth and love demonstrated in their parents' parenting attitude. Perception of recognizing adolescents of multicultural family as Korean has meaningful difference in teachers support.
Students who discussed with parents when making career decisions perceived their parenting attitude more positively, and teachers support is higher among social support. Female students were more sensitive to ethnic/national identity than male students, and there was a meaningful difference in the importance of task and planning ability.
Based on this, regression analysis was conducted to verify the effect of career maturity to subordinate scope. Independence has meaningful difference statistically in teacher and friend support. Importance of career has meaningful difference among female students and with more negative (-)parenting attitude, more meaningful the difference was. Female students also showed a meaningful difference in terms of Planning, and it was especially true with more positive parenting attitude. The same result showed in Self-understanding. The effect of social support to adolescents of multicultural family is more important than to the students of regular family. Especially, teacher and friend support from school environment increases self-efficacy, which has an effect on career maturity. Based on this, qualitative changes need to be made in school environment rather than home environment for career maturity. Also, specialized multicultural approach and flexibility need to be used. Career education program and policymaking are required for career maturity of adolescents from multicutural families.
