‘Speaking’ can be determined as an expression behavior in which vocal language is set as its media. It is distinguished from ‘Writing’ in which written language is set as its media, which corresponds to description, besides it is distinguished from ‘Listening’ in which spoken language is set as its media, which corresponds to understanding.
Furthermore, the speaking under real condition is followed by far complex course. Because it is overall behavior in which a speaker and a listener interacts with each other under communication situation. Hence, in order to performing speaking education, paying great attention to the content selection for expressing is needed to be done, as well as linguistic communion between a speaker and a listener.
In particular, there is a demand for refinement of the instruction about emotional communication activity which is required for smooth communication between a speaker and a listener in performing Korean language education, However, taking a close look at speaking lesson inherited in Korean language education, we can't avoid from criticism which the lesson has been out of essentials of practical speaking one. Likewise, speaking education has been revealed to be in confusion with targets of other education fields, not being established as a separated independent field.
Speaking education and education drama have something in common aspect essentially, that is to say, both of them presents ‘totality of life’. Speaking education should involve an area of transferring the meaning and expand the area to speciality which deals with delicate linguistic circumstance and emotional issues among individuals.
The value of education drama activity, which adopts the drama technique for coping with the speciality, can be found as follows; Firstly, drama activity increases communication ability by providing an opportunity to apply learning language into real-life condition. Secondly, drama activity has an effect to motivation of learning and enhancement of class atmosphere and it allows learners to participate in activity so that they can feel accomplishment and confidence. Thirdly, drama activity enables learners to acquire vocabulary and to speak with varied intonation according to circumstance as well as to use non-verbal communication such as eye contact, facial expressions, gestures, and etc.
Like so, employing education drama with a great educational effect and applying it to the lesson can be led to the diversity of lesson. And such diversity can be of assistance of good education for the purpose of inspiring learners and increasing their participation degree. Because it results in encouragement of class atmosphere which is subject to be boring and be depressed.
There have been various examples and suggestions on the Korean language education from many researches, however, in which systemicity and unification haven’t been found until now. Accordingly, an in-depth analysis with various viewpoints is needed to be conducted as a clue to the solution of the situation. In addition a general manual including cultural contents which let learners understand and accept Korean language is needed to be written for the Korean language education.
It doesn’t means to make learners in monotonous education but it means to enable them in easy understanding and acceptance by considering and combining their grade, teaching method customized with learning circumstance through referring and applying the general manual. Consequently, it would be led to sufficient understanding and proper usage of Korean language depending on the relevant situation.
It cannot be said that perfect teaching-learning method for learners exists. When drawing transition history of the teaching-learning method, it cannot be said as such. Nevertheless it can be said that there is common view which suggests a need of sufficient discussion and review in order to explore which of methods is more effective for the learner’s communication. Therefore, it is necessary for researchers to consider the exploring. And if a better method is found it will be desired to follow it. The reason is it proposes the direction of Korean language as one of foreign languages.
Until now, it is fact that our teaching-learning method has been imported from foreign countries and has been accepted to us as it is. From now, emphasizing to come up with our own style teaching-learning methods in our own way and to escape from repeating past practices, I am anticipating the emergence of up-to-date methods supported by objective evidences through carrying out Further researches.
