ZenZen(全然) is a Japanese adverb which is considered that it associates with negative vocabularies, and it is not correct to accompany positive expressions even though it is used in the positive context in these days. Therefore, this study investigates the historical background of the adverb Zenzen and the changes in its usage to ascertain the reason why people believe that the adverb has to be employed in only negative context.
Through the research of the real examples using Zenzen under dissimilar conditions such as Japanese literature, media, TV shows and blogs, the early uses accompanying affirmative words are found, so it is proved that Zenzen can be used in both negative and positive contexts. However, the number of affirmative examples is limited, thus just like the norm consciousness, Zenzen must be used in negative contexts, appeared as the viewpoint considering the use of Zenzen with affirmation as misuse spreads in the postwar period. According to Japanese dictionaries, Zenzen has two meanings in affirmative sentences ; first, its initial meaning is 「all, altogether, entirely, completely」. The second meaning used in the recent period is 「very, a lot, so」. Nevertheless, with many examples, it is confirmed that Zenzen can have more meanings over 「very, a lot, much」 under different contexts.
With further research, it is revealed that Korean people have the same superstition, Zenzen must respond to negation, for certain reasons. First of all, Koreans identify Zenzen with Jeonhyeo(전혀) having a similar meaning but being used in only negative context. On top of that, Japanese textbooks published in Korea indicate that Zenzen with positive words is misused regardless of the fact that Zenzen has been used in both negative and positive sentences.
This study will help the instructors teaching Japanese and the students learning Japanese have the accurate and correct knowledge as to Zenzen. Furthermore, it will also give some help to translators to make more precise translations.
