A contrastive study on polysemy of Korean and Japanese measure adjectives ‘nopta/takai’

This thesis attempts a contrastive analysis of the polysemy between two measure adjectives: ‘nopta’ in Korean and ‘takai’ in Japanese. The study analyzes polysemy from the perspective of cognitive linguistics in order to explain the principles of the semantic extensions and relations among the sub-senses. This would help KFL(Korean as a foreign language) learners to effectively understand meaning and usage of polysemous words.
To analyze, above all, each sense of ‘nopta’ and ‘takai’ was clarified from dictionaries, prior researches and corpus. Then, prototypical meaning was identified through the way of concreteness and observability, usage constraints, and directionality of semantic derivation. The derived senses were generated from prototype through metaphor, metonymy, and synecdoche. Also, the polysemy network indicating the relation among the senses was drawn from the whole process of the semantic extension.
As a result of analysis, both similarities and differences between ‘nopta’ and ‘takai’ were found. It was verified that both of them have a same prototypical meaning, which is ‘to extends long from the ground.’
On the other hand, each of them has its own unique senses that the other does not have. This indicates that Korean and Japanese have built up polysemy in different way. The polysemous network of the ‘nopta’ in Korean seems to have been developed in psychological domain and have subdivisions related to it. For example, there are two additional extended senses; ‘to have a large quantity as an abstract concept’, ‘to have a strong and dominant opinion or argument’. In contrasts, ‘takai’ in Japanese seems to have been developed in spatial and stative domain and have subdivisions related to them: 'to be tall as a human being' and 'to have a strong scent or smell'. The difference in meaning between 'nopta' and 'takai' can be also identified with synonyms. While 'nopta' is able to be substituted with '많다(mantha)' which is an adjective related to the amount, 'takai' is difficult to be substituted with '多い(ooi)', an amount-related-adjective in Japanese. However, two polysemy networks show that overall semantic extension in ‘nopta’ and ‘takai’ is similar in terms of whole meaning and semantic extension.
Finally, the thesis suggests a teaching method of polysemous words for the future Japanese learners who learn Korean as a foreign language. This study will help other foreign learners of Korean language, providing not only an improved teaching method, but also better collocation exercises to reduce errors related to the use of polysemy.
