The purpose of this study is to classify coined words with those coined for the last four years and examine their usage with examples and then suggest teaching-learning methods applicable to Korean education. Differently from the past, these days, Korean learners intend to understand Korea multilaterally including society and culture as well as Korean as their goal for Korean learning is different from the former. Thus, it is needed to reflect those Korean learners’ change and demand, and also, it is necessary to make efforts to understand and share the use of vocabulary that changes along with the change in society.
This study has checked if they are really newly coined words by monitoring articles in major daily s, broadcast news scripts, or internet news articles for the last four years from 2010. After classifying the coined words collected based on their word formation, the study has examined the meaning of each coined word. Based on this, the has suggested education methods that can allow learners to understand not only Korean vocabulary and word formation but Korean culture and society as well generally with those coined words.
Chapter 2 examines the definition and range of coined words and then classifies the coined words collected from all sorts of materials based on the types of word formation and investigates the meaning of each coined word.
And based on this, Chapter 3 gives examples from Korean textbooks connecting those coined words with socio-cultural phenomena and suggests education methods that can allow learners to understand not only Korean vocabulary and word formation but Korean culture and society as well generally with those coined words. As there have been no textbooks to teach coined words reflecting socio-cultural phenomena, this researcher has developed a textbook arbitrarily and suggested teaching-learning methods for it. Using coined words considering Koreans’ preferences or characteristics, the researcher has attempted to allow learners to use them in their everyday lives positively based on the situations of popular dramas presented in the textbook. Also, because learners have encountered those coined words in their lives in Korea or media frequently but hardly know the clear leaning of them, the textbook explains the meaning of each coined word in the textbook for coined words. In addition, the textbook explains how the word has been formed for each coined word so that learners can infer the meaning more easily than before when they encounter words coined in similar ways afterwards. And it includes formative evaluation so as to check their understanding.
Coined words are still being produced, and they will keep appearing in the future as human society changes. It is expected that Korean learners can learn coined words newly appearing according to the change of time properly and lead their language lives positively by understanding the society or culture that is changing continually in Korea. Based on the understanding and interest over coined word education in this research, it is expected that useful and effective teaching methods will be developed further afterwards for Korean learners.
