This study aims to investigate a relation between understanding of the ergative verb and English proficiency. In order to examine this purpose, Grammaticality Judgment Test (GJT) was used to 86 Korean high school students. The questionnaire is comprised of twenty ergative sentences and thirty sentences consisted of other major English grammar items.
The results of this study are as follows:
First, the higher English proficiencies are, the lower the rate of overpassivization of the ergative verb. Thus, as the proficiency increases, L2 learners are aware of the characteristics of the ergative verb.
Second, the results of GJT suggest that most L2 learners have difficulties in learning the concept of 'voice.'
Based of the results, the pedagogical implication is given here to facilitate a better instruction of passive voice constructions. It is helpful for L2 learners to be exposed to a variety of meaningful contexts in usage of ergative verbs for a better communication.
