The purpose of the study was to examine the effects of TEE on Korean Middle School students’ learning achievement and affective factors with regard to their proficiency level.
The subjects were 60 female students of J middle school in Seoul. Both the experiment group and control group were taught English for about 4 weeks from March to April. The teaching materials and teachers were the same for each group except for the language. The subjects in the experiment group went through TEE(Teaching English in English), and subjects in the control group were taught in their native language, Korean. Before the experiment was started, all the subjects took pre-tests for English learning achievement, anxiety, self-efficacy, interest, risk-raking, and learning motivation and, after 4 weeks, they all took the post-tests to figure out the difference between two groups.
For the analysis of the study, SPSS Win 21.0 program was used. The study made use of frequency analysis, technical statistics, and One-way ANOVA.
The findings were as followed:
First, it turned out that TEE has a positive effect on the improvement of students’ listening and writing ability. TEE had a meaningful effect especially on the English learning achievement of the low level students. Next, TEE had a meaningful relationship with students’ learning interest and motivation which played an important role in language learning.
These study results gave some implications in English education. TEE should be used as a way of improving listening ability, especially for lower level students. By providing students with more educational opportunities through introducing TEE in the classrooms, the students will be exposed to the target language more effectively. Furthermore, it gives them an opportunity to interact with each other in English more efficiently.
