Even though, cross-linguistically, motion phenomena is universal and elements of its event are identical, each phase to lexicalization of these elements are different. In particular, in frame of event of motion, depending on that what information of meaning adds to motion verbs, syntactic structure becomes different. In the cognitive linguistic perspective, main discussion on motion verbs started from Talmy(1985).
Talmy(1985, 1991) argues that languages can de categorized depending on how elements of meaning of verb are fused each other and lexicalized and every language in the world can be classified by whether the verbs express the direction/path of motion or whether they focus on the manner of motion, with satellite element. One group is ‘verb-framed languages’ and the other one is ‘satellite-framed languages’. According to him, English and German are ‘satellite-framed languages’ while Korean is a ‘verb-framed language’. However, discussion on type of Korean is still progressing. Accordingly, this study aims to clarify characteristics of ‘gada’(가다:go) and ‘oda’(오다:come), main motion verbs of Korean Language by comparing and analyzing the motion verbs of Korean, English and German. In order to achieve this goal, features of these motion verbs ‘go’ and ‘come’ in the novel 『Please Look after Mom』by Kyung-sook Shin in Korean, English and German editions are analyzed. This is significant because an identical text is analyzed in three different languages of Korean, English and German. The reason Kyungsook Shin's 『Please Look after Mom』was chosen is that this novel are translated and published in various languages and it is valuable as its theme contains an universal subject of ‘Mum’ and it covers a story reflected a mother's life and meaning in the contemporary times and sympathized by everybody.
Main results of this study are as follows:
First, the conventional languages as ‘verb-framed’ have verbs consisting of a single word but in case of Korean, verbs are in complex form which the motion and path are fused into the verbs and are realized.
Second, in Korean, scene of motion is stressed and displayed in the verb.
Third, Korean Language contains motion path in the verb itself using expressions such as prefix ‘되-’.
Fourth, <method/path/motion> appears in a verb, for example in ‘걸어 들어가다’(walk and come in) in Korean.
Fifth, Korean motion verbs are frequently used with various symbolic words to specify motion paths.
As a result, Korean Language has features of ‘Verb-framed language’ as well as its own unique characteristics.
This study is meaningful as an identical text are analyzed based on translated works in various languages by native speakers and the text used frequently in daily conversation with universality is sampled in order to clarify characteristics of Korean motion verbs.
