A Study on Cultural Education in Korean Food Culture Room
This dissertation aims to pose a plan for Korean cultural education through the subject classroom system. It especially attempts to construct subject classrooms exclusively for food culture within the whole culture and thus formulate a plan to apply them practically. Therefore, this dissertation discussed the following procedures and methods.
In Chapter 1, the study’s goals and necessity are explained, and preceding research is reviewed. The Chapter especially divided research about cultural education and the subject classroom system in two and examined not only the importance of cultural education but discussions that stress cultural education for communication, and studies regarding the subject classroom system were centered on the characteristics of the subject classroom system and application case studies of the subject classroom system in foreign language subjects.
In Chapter 2, because it is necessary to construct a theoretical foundation suitable for planning a culture syllabus to be applied in the subject classroom environment, the Chapter reestablished the relationship between culture and communication as discussed in preceding research and organized the related theories. On the other hand, with the general theoretical study about the subject classroom system, as it is a new system, this Chapter investigated the characteristics of the subject classroom system arranged in a study on schools where it was enforced by way of example. Additionally, the Chapter contemplated the meaning that the subject classroom system lends to education by applying Jaechun Kim (2010)’s research. His research concluded that the educational paradigm, which the subject classroom system’s enforcement is not simply changing systematically, is moving from a teacher-centric to a student-centric approach.
Chapter 3 investigated the reality of Korean-language cultural education through a field study about the curriculum that current Korean language education facilities are implementing and the results of a questionnaire that targeted foreign Korean learners. Here, applying the materials that investigated the research trends of Korean-language cultural education, the Chapter introduces which research topics about cultural education have up until now been the majority, as well as, among those, what were the primary methods of research.
Chapter 4 proposes a new paradigm through the questionnaire results along with criticism of theoretical studies. Because the cultural studies were selected with consideration for communication in this section as well, this Chapter presents which cultural items of which Korean native speakers have a high level of awareness. With this as a basis, the Chapter plans a Korean culture class which focuses on food culture rather than handling the wide spectrum of cultural items, based on research that investigated what kind of instruction about culture the students desire.
Chapter 5 introduced the food culture subject classroom, which will be wholly responsible for teaching about food within cultural education. The structure will be examined with illustrations, and the Chapter also planned a syllabus that will be implemented in subject classrooms and presented that process of planning a syllabus.
Chapter 6 simultaneously arranged the content discussed in the body and explained the significance and limits of the dissertation. Further, the Chapter makes a proposal about succeeding studies that need not only the possibility of introducing the subject classroom system but, henceforth, to be supplemented with countermeasures.
