The research purports to find the influence of Korean film captions on incidental vocabulary acquisition by learners of the Korean language. It is impossible for L2 learners to learn all the vocabulary explicitly. Thus, there could be acquisition of incidental vocabulary outside the classrooms. In addition, learning motivation is a critical factor for the acquisition of language that could determine the success or failure of learning. with more smart phone utilization nowadays, learners watch movies, dramas and videos more readily and frequently.
This study tries to examine whether the utilization of Korean captions will contribute to the acquisition of incidental vocabulary to the learners of Korean language when they are exposed to mass media. to test it, an experiment was conducted with 24 pre-intermediate level learns who are studying Korean at a Korean university language center. they are learners with various nationalities who were then divided into two groups of 12 participants placed either in an experimental group or a controlled group. Participants in the experimental group watched 'Christmas in August' with Korean captions whereas those in the second group did the same with no captions. they were given a post test 1 right after watching the movie, and a post test 2 was given a week later. The post test 1 tried to test the effect of film captions in the short-term memory while the post test 2 examined its effect in the long-term memory. Participants were not informed in advance that they would be given tests after watching the movie so they could concentrate on the movie. in addition to that, participants in the experimental group were surveyed to find out the effect of captions and the prospect of caption utilization.
1. The experimental group exhibited more significant achievement in the acquisition of incidental vocabulary than did the controlled group.
2. There was no significant difference in the learners’ learning of incidental vocabulary in the long-term memory.
3. Classes that utilized Korean Film captions influenced the learning motive and the acquisition of vocabulary.
Results of data analysis revealed that Korean captions could facilitate incidental vocabulary learning. this research differentiates itself by examining the impact of the provision of captions during the film appreciation on the acquisition of incidental vocabulary whereas the vast of other research utilize movies to study its influence on the listening improvement. I hope that the result of this research will be helpful for the field of Korean language education to motivate students’ learning and to excite them as well as to contribute to the acquisition of vocabulary as a method of learning vocabulary. I look forward to seeing more research that will supplement the limitations of this research in the future.
