This dissertation was written in order to teach Korean word order to English speakers by contrasting Korean Word order with English word order. There is only a few dissertations dealing with contrast between Korean and English word order. But English speakers usually feel uncomfortable from beginners because word orders of Korean and English are different. So, it is desirable for Korean teachers to teach Korean word order to English speakers from their beginning.
This dissertation is based on contrastive linguistics and input enhancement theory. Teachers can teach Korean to English speakers effectively when they clarify the distinction between Korean and English and anticipate errors of English speakers. And students can learn and remember Korean effectively through contrasting two languages. Also, if Korean teachers use input enhancement theory, they can teach Korean in the best methods.
The feature of this dissertation is to try to teach Korean word order by using visual methods. If students learn Korean by analyzing Korean sentences with visual methods, they can concentrate on Korean word order better and study Korean effectively.
This dissertation presents three visual methods of analyzing Korean word order. The first way is to use visual input enhancement. The second way is to use horizontal lines and vertical lines. And the third way is to use tree diagrams.
