Abstract

A Study of Grammatical and Pragmatic Equivalence Exhibited in the Process of Translating
English Anaphoric Constructions into Korean

The purpose of this thesis is to analyze how English anaphoric expressions are equivalently translated into Korean, focusing on pragmatic as well as grammatical equivalence. The grammatical equivalence means that the equivalence between a source text(ST, henceforth) and a target text(TT, henceforth) is achieved by employing a range of grammatical phenomena such as substitution, ellipsis, or repetition of sentential elements, while the pragmatic equivalence is achieved by considering various contextual factors and implicature coming from social and cultural differences. In this study, I examine the anaphoric phenomenon exhibited in a couple of English texts and their Korean translations to show how they successfully or unsuccessfully achieve a certain level of equivalence. The study is organized as follows. Chapter 2 discusses some theoretical background, surveying the notions of equivalence in translation and reviewing some grammatical differences between English and Korean in terms of anaphora. Chapter 3 shows how/whether the equivalence of translation is achieved by examining a couple of English original texts (Charlotte’s Web by E. B. White, and The Old Man and the Sea by Earnest Hemingway) and their Korean translations. Chapter 4 comes up with a brief conclusion.
The result of the analysis of grammatical equivalence can be summarized as follows. In the case of Charlotte's Web, a children's book written in a simple and clear style, the anaphoric expressions in the English text were heavily substituted by other expression, repeated by the same words, or occasionally replaced by proper nouns in Korean translations. There were, however, rare occurrences of ellipsis except for the cases in which the subject/object of the sentences were pronouns in the original text. In the case of The Old Man and the Sea, of which three versions of Korean translations were examined, the anaphoric expression in the English text often underwent substitution and ellipsis in Korean translations, and the ellipsis was more often compared with the case of Charlotte’s Web. One thing to note is that not all three translated versions used the same tactic for grammatical equivalence, which seems to suggest that each translator may have had different thoughts on what the sentences really meant/intended. It appears that repetition was employed for the purpose of emphasis, while ellipsis was used when the reference of an entity was not really necessary. Also, in translating the sentence with an ergative verb, ellipsis was often employed.
As for the pragmatic equivalence in English-Korean translation, an interesting difference emerged among the Korean translations depending on whether the Koran texts were targeted for child or adult readers. In the case of Charlotte's Web, of which the original text as well as the Korean text were seemingly targeted for children, any attempts to get pragmatic equivalence were not observed. In the case of The Old Man and the Sea, however, two types of attempts to get pragmatic equivalence were observed, either by using the contextual information to refer to the anaphoric expression, or by using some background knowledge of the world surrounding the anaphoric expression. Again, there were some differences among the translators with regard to the use (or non-use) of tactics to achieve pragmatic equivalence.
