This study investigates and classifies a variety of discourse functions of backchannels and the linguistic types per the use of discourse functions, focusing on backchannels in particular among the elements of discourse pragmatics It also explores the differences in the aspects of use of backchannels targeting the Japanese learners of the Korean language and the Chinese learners of the Korean language and Korean native language speakers who are sorted into the upper ranks and the lower ranks with the variables of their native languages and the proficiency.
Although the necessity of backchannels in communication is highly shown, the teaching on backchannels has not been conducted separately, so learners cannot help learning on their own. Therefore, this study investigates the aspects of use of backchannels among the Japanese and Chinese learners of the Korean language as organizing the various discourse functions and the linguistics types per the use of discourse functions.
The structure of this study is as follows. First of all, the necessity and the purpose of this study is explained, and then, the existing studies related to this study are organized and the questions for the study are deduced in the chapter 1. The first question of the study is to analyze whether there are differences in the aspects of use of backchannels according to the native language. The second question of the study is to analyze whether there are differences in the aspects of use of backchannels according to the proficiency. Finally, the third question of the study is to analyze whether there are differences in the aspects of use of backchannels according to the proficiency within the native language.
In the chapter 2, the theoretical backgrounds are specified. The concepts and the boundaries of backchannels are organized, and then, the discourse functions of backchannels and the linguistics types per the use of discourse functions which are the cores of the discussions in this study are classified.
The methodology of the study is described in the chapter 3. The selection criteria of the participants for this study, the composition of DCT which is the data collection tool to collect the aspects of use of backchannels, the research procedure, and the statistical program and its method used in data analysis is described in order.
The findings of the results are suggested in the chapter 4. The points whether there are differences in the use of discourse functions of backchannels and the linguistics types per the use of discourse functions according to the native language and whether there are differences in the usage of discourse functions of backchannels and the linguistics types per discourse functions according to the proficiency. Although there are many cases in which the significant differences are shown between each learners’ group and Korean native language speakers according to the native language, the differences among the Japanese learners of the Korean language and the Chinese learners of the Korean language are not so significant. The cases to show that the learners are influenced by their native languages in the use of backchannels are found. In addition, there are many cases in which there are significant differences between the learners’ group and Korean native language speakers according to the proficiency, while the differences between the learners in the upper ranks and the learners in the lower ranks are not so significant. Additionally, it is found that most cases do not show differences according to the proficiency when examining the differences in the proficiency within the native language.
Finally, the findings of the study are arranged, and the implications and suggestions from this study are presented in the chapter 5. The implications of this study are as follows. Firstly, it contributes to establishing the basic materials for educating discourse pragmatics by exploring the aspects of use of backchannels in the field of discourse pragmatics in which the studies have been insufficient. Secondly, it conducts the studies regarding the side of listener in the field of the Korean language education that has been centered on speaker mainly. Thirdly, it attempts to arrange the boundaries and the categories of backchannels which have been constantly controversial in the existing studies. Fourthly, for the Korean language education from now on, it can suggest the necessity of systematical education on discourse pragmatics in the way that the learners show different aspects from the Korean native language speakers according to their mother languages and the proficiency in the aspects of use of backchannels. Particularly considering that the differences between the learners in the upper ranks and the lower ranks are not significant, it can raises the issues on the Korean language education which is recently conducted.
