A contrastive study on the ellipsis of postposition in Korean and Japanese : Focusing on ‘neun’ and ‘wa’
This thesis aimed at investigating the abbreviation phenomenon of Japanese postposition ‘wa’ and Korean postposition ‘neun’, which corresponds with it, by focusing on short sentence(単文), and checking the difference and common feature in abbreviation phenomenon of the postpositions, ‘wa’ and ‘neun’ of the two languages.
There are two types of postposition abbreviation phenomenon. First is, ‘postposition abbreviation phenomenon’ which is to omit postposition, and second is, ‘non-postposition phenomenon’, which is a sentence gets rather awkward when it has postposition, since it does not match with any postposition. This thesis proceeded a discussion mainly with the abbreviation phenomenon of ‘wa’, ‘neun’ which exclude non-postposition phenomenon.
First, in Chapter 2, this research considered the abbreviation phenomenon of ‘wa’ after investigating the subject and comparison which are the basic usage of Japanese postposition ‘wa’. The researcher considered that ‘wa’ abbreviation phenomenon is related to 1) condition about NP which combines with ‘wa’, and 2) condition about expression form, the results of the discussion on the cases of possible abbreviation are as follows, when abbreviation is impossible under the two conditions. First, it was confirmed that the cases when the abbreviation of Japanese ‘wa’ is impossible under the condition related to NP which combines with ‘wa’ are that NP which combines with ‘wa’ is the third person, also, ‘NPwa’ expresses the meaning of comparison or the correspondent part of ‘NPwa’ emphasizes, etc., and the case when the abbreviation of ‘wa’ is possible is that NP which combines with ‘wa’ is the first and second person. Second, the case when the abbreviation of ‘wa’ is impossible under the condition related to expression form is the instance that ‘wa’ expresses determination, and the case when the abbreviation of ‘wa’ is possible is the instance of the expression which expresses indetermination, and the abbreviation of ‘wa’ gets easier when the degree, which a narrator considers the relevant idea is true, gets lower. And in case of the expression which has thoughtful expression for the listener, the abbreviation of ‘wa’ is possible.
In Chapter 3, the researcher investigated the common feature and difference in the abbreviation phenomenon between Japanese postposition ‘wa’ and Korean postposition 'neun‘ by comparing with the abbreviation phenomenon of Korean postposition 'neun’ based on the abbreviation phenomenon of Japanese postposition ‘wa’ which was discussed in Chapter 2, and the results are as follows.
First, under the condition related to NP which combines with ‘wa’, 'neun‘, the abbreviation phenomenon of Japanese ‘wa’ and Korean ‘neun’ is almost the same. However, in Korean, the abbreviation of ‘neun’ is possible in some cases, when NP which combines with ’는‘ is the third person. Also, in Korean, the abbreviation of ‘neun’ is possible in some cases when there is a pause.
Second, under the condition related to expression form, Japanese ‘wa’ has high degree that a narrator considers the relevant idea to be true, that is, the abbreviation is impossible in case it expresses determination, while the abbreviation of Korean ‘neun’ is possible in case it expresses determination.
Third, Japanese ‘wa’ has a low degree that a narrator considers the relevant idea to be true, that is, the abbreviation is possible in case it expresses indetermination, however in Korean, the abbreviation of ‘neun’ is impossible in case it expresses a narrator's personal determination, in case of the expression of indetermination, and the abbreviation of ‘neun’ is possible in case of the expression of information which was heard from a third party. That is, in case of the expression of indetermination, the abbreviation of Korean ‘neun’ seems to be related to whether the sentence is speaker oriented or listener oriented.
Fourth, the abbreviation of Japanese ‘wa’ is possible in all cases, when it adds considerate expression towards the listener, however the abbreviation of Korean ‘neun’ seems to be related to whether the sentence expresses the state or movement, the abbreviation of ‘neun’ is possible in case of the sentence which expresses the state, and the abbreviation of ‘neun’ is impossible in case of the sentence which expresses the movement.
