This study is about Thai Korean learners' diphthong pronunciation analysis, and the objective is to find out the errors that Thai novice learners make, who learn Korean as a second language, when they pronounce Korean diphthong, and also to find the types and the causes of utterance errors.
The first chapter clarifies the objective and necessity of the study. Preceding research about Korean diphthong and Thai learners' pronunciation are reviewed, core contents and the results are also summarized; however, study of Korean diphthong for Thai learners is not yet conducted. Therefore, this study experimented Thai learners' diphthong utterance in a diverse environment.
In the second chapter, theoretical background is introduced, Korean and Thai's phonological characteristics are observed in a contrastive linguistic view, Korean and Thai vowel system and syllable structure are contrasted and analyzed to find out similarities and differences. Since this study is trying to use government phonology to discover utterance error, government phonology is briefly introduced.
The third chapter, based on Korean and Thai phonological characteristics, organizes inappropriate utterance aspects which might be caused when Thai Korean learners pronounce diphthong. In 3.1, vowels are divided according to the vowel affiliation; ‘y affiliation diphthong', ‘w affiliation diphthong', and ‘ɯ affiliation diphthong', and for each affiliation, predicting what kind of utterance error would be occurred if they have syllable structures such as 'diphthong without prefix consonant (V)', 'diphthong / final consonant (VC)', 'diphthong with prefix consonant (CV)', 'initial consonant / diphthong / final consonant (CVC)'. Kim Jung Wook(2009)'s diphthong utterance error types are referenced to divide error types.
In order to find out Thai learners' diphthong utterance characteristics, the experiment was implemented with 10 Thai Korean learners. The experiment was divided into primary and secondary. In primary, Thai learners were told to read out designed words, and in secondary, Thai learners got to hear how the native pronounce and were told to repeat.
In chapter 4, through recorded data from the above experiment, is going to analyze Thai learners' diphthong utterance error types and rate. And then organize utterance errors, and find out the causes of the error through government phonology. The experiment result is stated; first, y affiliation diphthong has higher rate of errors than w affiliation. Unlike other affiliations, ɯ affiliation errors can be eliminated if one grasp utterance rule. Second, diphthong with prefix consonant (CV(C)) has higher error rate compare to the one without prefix consonant. Third, the hardest and the highest error rate occurs in 'y affiliation diphthong with prefix consonant (CV(C))', and 'y, w affiliation diphthong without prefix consonant (V(C))' has the lowest error rate.
