A Study on Selecting a List of Korean Vocabulary for North Korean Young Defectors

The purpose of this study is to select a list of essential vocabularies before North Korean young defectors enter schools in Korea. Firstly, it starts with the research on the language environment of North Korean young defectors. The past language environment of North Korean young defectors was described by using previous researches. To investigate their current language environment, a questionnaire was carried out with 22 young defectors of Hanggum School and the results of the questionnaire were analyzed. Then, it has been established a method of selection and criteria of selection for the basic vocabulary to learn for youth defectors. Selection criteria of basic vocabulary are 'frequency', 'language needs' and 'learning possibility'. These criteria were presented in the (Richard, 1970) and (Park Kyung-Ja, 1994). It has been added another criterion to determine how effectively people can use vocabulary in real life, and it is called 'practicality'.
Process of selecting basic vocabulary was based on step-by-step selection process of (Shin Myeon-Seon, 2010). Regarding this process of selection, firstly a large amount of words were listed in the first draft of a primary vocabulary-list and then words whose 'importance' is low were removed gradually. The words whose "importance" is 1 from the vocabulary list of (Shin Myeong-Seon, 2010) were excluded from the first draft of the primary vocabulary-list for everyday living. Then a questionnaire was conducted with 10 teachers of North Korean young defectors, in order to distinguish the vocabulary whose 'language needs' is low to North Korean young defectors, and these vocabularies were removed from the primary vocabulary list. In order to delete the vocabulary whose "learning possibility" is high out of this secondary vocabulary list, I conducted a test with 7 young defectors. The vocabulary that everyone had answered "I have already known that word." was considered as high "learning possibility" vocabularies. And these vocabularies were removed from the list. As a consequence, total 625 vocabularies were produced as ‘the list of everyday-living-vocabulary for young North Korean defectors'.
Next, in order to constitute vocabulrary for curricular subjects, primary vocabulary were extracted from 『learning term concept dictionary for elementary school students』 and they were made up as a first draft of a list. Using these vocabularies, a questionnaire survey was conducted on the "importance" of those vocabularies to the teachers of each subject. Then, the vocabulary found to be in low 'importance' was removed from the list, and they have formed the second draft of vocabulary list. Lastly, the vocabulary surveyed as ‘learning possibility’ is high was removed from the second draft of vocabulary list. 29 ‘four characters idioms' were added to the subject of Korean and 156 English words which are also used as loan words in Korea were added to the subject of English. As a result, total 850 vocabularies were selected as ‘the list of vocabulary in subjects for young North Korean defectors'.
