A study on the development of learning contents of Korean textbook for occupational purposes
In accordance with the increasing number of Korean learners with specific purposes, it is necessary for the development of a wide range of textbooks in order to achieve the diversified purposes. After finishing off their study, despite the fact that the number of Korean learners desire to find a position in either Korean or Korean related company, there is no certain textbook that can guide for successful employment. Therefore, this study aims to suggest the direction of developing internal contents of occupational Korean language textbook, which appropriately provides with the practical knowledge on job searches as well as language education for pre-vocational Korean learners.
In this study we selected and analysed fifteen units that deal with a subject on finding a job in the five Korean textbooks for general purposes and the three business Korean textbooks published in Korea. In analysing these textbooks, we focused on internal contents to see how well constructed they are. Furthermore, we also analysed English, Japanese and Chinese textbooks, currently the most widely being used in Korea, which are targeted at occupational purposes.
The analysis on Korean textbooks presented that internal contents on Korean textbook have some week points. First, as for the subject, it lacks of diversity and mainly focuses on an interview and a résumé although it can be comprised of several topics. Second, the number of vocabularies and expressions are largely related to essential prerequisites for recruitment. Moreover, they sometimes are not directly relevant to the subject of each unit. Third, tasks are spoken language centered and authentic tasks are lacked. In addition, The more samples to achieve on successful tasks require for the learners. Forth, cultures on the textbooks are mostly about Korean tradition rather than those of practical and business.
As a result of the second analysis on the foreign language textbooks for occupational purposes, we found some positive points to reflect to the upcoming development of content for an occupational Korean textbook. There are six items to be considered in terms of constructing an occupational Korean textbook. 1) propose the textbook comprised of a task-centered syllabus. 2) construct of diversified and subdivided subjects which cover practical experiences when finding a job in the real world. 3) organize useful vocabularies and expression patterns with idioms and proverbs for successful tasks. 4) provide with authentic and meaningful tasks through pair and group activities with useful guidelines or tips. 5) select content of cultural behavior in job interview, phone conversation, and the status of Korean job application, related to the subject of each unit. 6) provide appendix such as word index, a list of Korean company, a list of online recruitment site, and personal experiences from foreigners who are successfully employed in Korean company.
Based on the principles above, in chapter 5, this study shows an example of a new syllabus for Korean occupational language textbook. It will be applied to establishments and development of Korean textbook for the occupational purposes that are focused on practicality and authenticity for foreign job seekers.
