This study is to seek efficient teaching-learning method by using noun-focused grammatical collocation as one of grammars in Korean language education for Chinese students.
The study defines “grammatical collocation” as ‘a composition limitedly composed of non-independent grammatical factors and vocabulary factors, which performs single grammatical function in a sentence by itself but it should be a complex composition larger than “Enjeol”.’ And if grammatical collocations of which vocabulary factors are nouns, they are defined as “noun-centered grammatical collocations,” which are objects of this research.
The research is based on two study methods of contrastive analysis and error analysis. First, by carrying out contrastive analysis of Korean and Chinese languages, it compares Korean noun-centered grammatical collocations and similar Chinese expressions. Moreover, it predicts possible difficulties that Chinese students may experience while learning noun-centered grammatical collocations. depending on semantic function of the collocations, they are classified into 15 types, and analyzed to identify morphosyntactic characteristics of each noun-focused grammatical collocation and their actual use by comparing them with Chinese expressions.
The error analysis is based on the survey conducted on 249 Chinese undergraduates who are majored in Korean language to see their noun-centered grammatical collocation patterns. Their error patterns were also analyzed from both morphosyntactic and semantic perspectives.
The study focuses on noun-centered grammatical collocations in four Korean language textbooks published in China, and suggests how to appropriately use them by correcting relevant errors in each textbook.
In addition, it also reviews PPP and TTT models for effective teaching of noun-centered grammatical collocations. It suggests using PPP model to teach individual noun-centered grammatical collocation while using TTT model to teach grammar items with similar meaning.
The study has implications in that it contemplates the current status of how Chinese students actually use Korean noun-focused grammatical collocations and suggests how to effectively teach them based on various teaching models. But as the analysis of current usage is based on survey questionnaires, it is not enough to identify overall noun-centered grammatical collocation usage patterns in detail. And it has certain limitations in analysis since it does not suggest different levels of noun-centered grammatical collocation usage. It is expected that such limitations will be overcome by follow-up studies.
