The purpose of this is to analyze the phenomena that appear in liquids deletion and vowel- ? realization in the sequence of /ln/ within the framework of Government Phonology(GP).
In order to treat these processes, I adopt the morphology-phonology interface in which GP recognizes two types of structure: analytic and non-analytic. In an analytic construction, morphology is visible to phonology, while in a non-analytic structure the phonology is insensitive to morphology. The former has the type of [[A] B], whereas the latter has the type [A B]. Concretely, for the structure [[A] B], relevant phonological processes apply to A and concatenate with B, with phonological processes then applying to the result of the concatenation (i. e. [A B]). In the non-analytic structure [A B], phonological processes simply apply to the result of concatenation. This implies that non-analytic structures are treated in the same way as mono-morphemic words.
On the basis of these two structures, this argues that the phenomena of the liquid deletion and ?-realization are phonologically motivated by the failure of a governing relation being established between /l/ and /n/ sequences in underlying representations. These two types of phonetic realization can then be captured by separate modes of morpheme concatenation. Specifically, the failure of the governing relations requires a repair strategy to modify the ill-formed sequence into a phonotactically permitted one. In terms of morpheme concatenation, while /l/-deletion is invoked in an analytic structure, in which the morpheme boundary is transparent on the one hand, the insertion of [?] between /l/ and /n/ is treated as a non-analytic structure, in which the morpheme boundary is ignored on the other. In this way, the different surface manifestation of these clusters are induced by governing relations.
