For this research, Chinese marriage immigrants that come from Chinese language groups of the beginner’s course were chosen as targets among the learners of Korean language that are lately increasing. It is to verify that when we teach vocabulary to Chinese marriage immigrants that have already learnt the Chinese characters using the Chinese words, they learn the Korean vocabulary more effectively and it helps them improve their vocabulary more compared to those that didn’t use the Chinese words. In learning a language, vocabulary education is very important. The importance of vocabulary education is being brought up in Korean education. From the point that the Chinese words take up a huge part in Korean vocabulary, the awareness on the importance of Chinese characters education for Korean vocabulary education is getting increased. Chinese are in the same language circle as us so they already have knowledge in Chinese characters, so they have an advantage in learning Korean vocabulary than learners from other language circles.
For the experiment, the learners were divided into a group that studies vocabulary using Chinese characters and a group that doesn’t use Chinese characters. Also in order to find out the practical needs of the Chinese learners on vocabulary learning using Chinese characters, a survey was carried on for the Chinese marriage immigrants that come from the Chinese language circle. As a result, we could find out that most of the learners from both the experiment group and the comparative group require classes using Chinese characters when learning the Korean vocabulary.
First, for the Korean vocabulary class, “list of Chinese words for studying Korean” of the beginner’s course were selected. For this Chinese words from the A level(beginner’s level) vocabulary list contained in the <The Report on the Vocabulary Chosen for Learning Korean> of The National Institute of the Korean Language were selected and arranged. Also vocabulary formed with Chinese words from the vocabulary list contained in <First Step to Korean Language with Immigrant Women> and <Korean Language with Immigrant Women 1, 2>(Beginner’s Course) were classified. From the classified Chinese words, the ones that are overlapped from the both data were arranged by frequency based on the <Modern Korean Usage Frequency> that the National Institute of the Korean Language has ed. From the 201 Chinese words that are selected for the beginner’s course of Korean studies, 120 Chinese words that comes under intermediate courses were selected again. For this research a few education methods were suggested using the selected Chinese words for learning the beginner’s course Korean, and they were used by being mixed with Korean vocabulary studies.
The purposer of this research was set on the vocabulary improvement through the Korean Chinese words education using Chinese characters, so in order to verify this vocabulary tests were carried on twice. Before carrying on the class in order to fine out whether the two groups have similar level of vocabulary or not, preliminary inspection was carried out. During the finishing step of the experiment post test was carried on in order to compare the improvement degree of the two groups. The statistics process of this research was done by the SPSS matching sample T-test, and we could find out that the learners that used Chinese characters to learn vocabulary showed more improvement than the ones that didn’t use Chinese characters.
What is important about this research is that Chinese marriage immigrants of the beginner’s course from Chinese language group that were seldom selected while discussing the necessity of studying Korean vocabulary were selected as learning subjects. Second, different from the opinion that says the vocabulary study using Chinese characters are only possible for levels above the intermediate courses, we tried to unearth that there are effects in vocabulary improvement for the learners of the beginner’s course also. For the coming researches, it is expected that we cognize that the necessity of vocabulary study using Chinese characters is needed not only for Chinese marriage immigrants from Chinese language groups but also for marriage immigrants from non-Chinese language groups, and carry on more strategical teaching methods and classes.
