As the number of immigrants went over 1.2 million in 2012, Korea is transforming itself to more multiracial, multilingual, and multicultural society. In the late 1980's, while marriage between a man in a rural area and a woman from a foreign country became a serious social issue, multinational marriage, which sets up a foundation for multicultural family, began to happen more vigorously.
An increase in interracial marriage also raised the number of multinational households, and it drew attention to education for multiracial families and foreign immigrant wives. Therefore, lately, under the government's control, a project called 'Multicultural Family Support Policy' has been promoted in order to help the women assimilate into Korean society. In other words, it supports the women
to have smooth communication with others, helps overcome hurdles of different cultures and traditions, and conducts educational or counseling programs to help
them adapt to Korean society. However, it remains to be seen whether or not those programs dedicated for the foreign wives are reflecting the true needs and demands of the wives. Therefore, the purposes that lie behind this study are as follows: to make the society aware that it is urgent to prepare support systems and programs to help the foreign women adapt to the society smoothly, and to
make them lead happy lives: to find out the current condition of adjustment programs that has been sporadically provided to the foreign women up until this
point: and to seek solutions for problems found during the study.
Thus, this study will cover 'the current condition of adjustment programs provided to foreign immigrant wives up until this point', 'problems of the programs for the wives', and 'remedies for programs and support systems whose purpose is to help the women smoothly adapt to the society, and to lead happy lives'.
To review overall situations that foreign wives are in, this study takes into consideration existing records, such as research, documents, s, statistics, etc.
Main contents of studying the existing records consist of a background for increase in interracial marriages, marital process of foreign immigrant wives, the current status of the women, domestic problems, multicultural family support
policy, support system for the wives, details on management of multicultural family support center, results of projects, etc.
