This research is purposed to identify the genre features on Korean self-introduction letter via analysis of genre on Korean self-introduction letter and present practical educational material necessary for teaching writing a letter of Korean self-introduction, as recognizing the difficulties in writing a letter of Korean self-introduction for foreign applicants who want to work for Korean corporations. A language learner is exposed to numerous texts, and since in order to understand the genre commonly used in society, intuitive but even high-level learners comes to difficulties in a field of expression like writing, it is required to become familiar with the genre. At this point, the genre analysis and genre-based approach provide learners genre information and activities that would raise awareness about genre(Hyland, 2004, p. 115).
In this research, Korean self-introduction letter is categorized, and by analyzing an employ purpose, one of sub-categories, we seek to aim for understand the generalized structure model and formulaic expression on the Korean self-introduction letter.
As a result of analysis of 50 self-introduction letters for an employment purpose on native Korean speakers, unlike English job application letter that is sent to human resource representative as a letter form, Korean self-introduction letter has a feature to explain him/herself in a constant form. Also, at this point, there appears to emerge typical 10 items such as growing background (46), reason to apply(46), plans after joining company(45), personality(41), social experience(22), skills and abilities(18), etc., and as result of analyzing the 6 high frequency items (growing background, reason to apply, plans after joining company, personality, social experiences, and skills and abilities), each item has usually a generalized structure and strategy. This shows that Korean native speakers have specific rules or strategies to write self-introduction letters. In addition, based on the structure specific analysis on the formulaic expression of major strategies, the research presented the generalized structure model together, and with that, as corpusing the whole self-introduction letter and each structure, statistical analysis was processed. On the based on the result of corpus statistics, it presented linguistic features of Korean self-introduction letters in selecting structure-specific and high frequency 25 vocabularies. And, in-depth interviews and surveys were performed with Korean company recruiters who hire foreign workers in order to ensure whether there are in common between the genre analysis results of employment purposed self-introduction letter and actual Korean self-introduction letter that foreign applicant should write.
As a result of in-depth interviews and surveys, most Korean companies were receiving Korean self-introduction letters when hiring foreign workers, and at that time, when the companies have their own application forms, almost same self-introduction letter form that Korean workers used should be also used in foreign worker applying process. As it was consistent with the results of the genre analysis from the specific item surveys, it brought more confidence. If a genre analysis decides what to teach, then a genre-based approach decides how to teach. This research, based on the genre analysis results, developed Korean self-introduction education materials and presented Korean self-introduction writing education strategy in utilizing a genre-based approach. Such a genre analysis and writing education strategy in utilizing a genre-based approach help learners more focus on their own stories and write fluently in grasping the characteristics of the genre and adjusting to a form expected in the society, not let them write in same style. The research result will be able to be utilized as positive educational materials with which foreign applicants can understand easier the characteristics of genre on the self-introduction letter.
