This study aims to examine and analyze the factors which have a serious influence on college students’ mobile phone addiction in relation to their frequent use of mobile phone.
To check the reverse function of the mobile phone use which have taken deep root as multimedia device in modern society, this study has been carried out for the purpose of investigating the factors which can predict and prevent mobile phone addiction through the emotional, social and economic factors and personal characteristic factors which have affected mobile phone addiction targeted for the college students.
After a few problems associated with college students’ mobile phone addiction are analyzed through it, Sound use of a mobile phone will be recommended.
And I'm having for my object that I'll be able to help prevent mobile phone addiction which occupies a place as a social problem.
In this research, the following questions were set in order to carry out such a goal.
First of all, What is the status of college students' mobile phone use ?
Second, what is the relationship between college students’ emotional factors - stress, depression, self-control, etc. and mobile phone addiction ?
Third, what is the relationship between the social and economic factors - Interpersonal relationship, family's economic, etc. and college students' mobile phone addiction ?
Fourth, what is the relationship between personal characteristics - gender, age, school grades, etc. and mobile phone addiction ?
Fifth, what are the factors which can predict college students' mobile phone addiction best ?
Sixth, what is the political measures to reduce mobile phone addiction ?
About 700 college students in five universities located in the Daegu-Gyeongbuk area participated in the survey for it and exactly 601 questionnaires except for a few copies which were not suitable were used for the analysis data.
The average age of the subjects - 216 male students, 385 female students respectively - who participated in the survey was 21.18 years old.
Three main factors as the independent variables to explain the cause of mobile phone addiction were defined and measured as follows.
- emotional factors ( stress, depression, self-control, etc.)
- social and economic factors ( Interpersonal relationship, family's economic, etc. )
- personal characteristic factors ( gender , age , school grades, etc. )
Tools for measuring the main factors in college students' mobile phone addiction are as follows.
1) To check the addictive behavior scale of mobile phone , Internet Addition Test written by Young (1996) was consulted and the questionnaires for measuring mobile phone addiction by Jang Hye Jin (2002) were used .
2) To evaluate the stress degree, the tool which Cohen, Kamarck & Mermelstein had developed in 1983 was used.
3) To check the depression degree, CES-D(the Center for Epidemiologic Depression Scale) which is Korean version of Epidemiology Studies Depression Scale was used.
4) To determine the level of self-control, Measure of Self-control by Gottfredson and Hirschi (1990) and Self-control Rating Scale by Kim Hyun-sook (1998) were consulted and the reconstructed form by Nam Hyon-mi (1999) was used.
5) To measure an interpersonal relationship, the reconstructed scale, 'Relationship Change Scale' by Kim Heung-gi (2006) was used, which was based on the translated form by Mun Seon-mo (1980) that might fit 'Interpersonal Relationship Scale' developed by Schlein and Guerney for our situation.
The following results were obtained by using a program for data analysis to this research. SPSS 20.0.
First, Frequency analysis was carried out to investigate the relationship between the independent variables on the subjects of mobile phone addiction.
Second, Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was conducted to investigate mobile phone addiction due to emotional factors - stress , depression , self-control, etc. and these variables showed a significant relationship to mobile phone addiction.
Third, Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was conducted to learn the relationship between mobile phone addiction and social and economic factors - interpersonal relationship, family's economic, etc. and the results showed that these variables had a significant relationship to mobile phone addiction.
Fourth, To learn the relationship between mobile phone addiction and personal characteristic factors - gender, age, school grades, etc., analysis of variance (ANOVA) was carried out and most of these variables except for school grades showed a significant relationship to mobile phone addiction.
Fifth, The survey was analyzed correlatively to check mutual relationship with all the variables related to mobile phone addiction and the result showed that stress had the biggest effect on mobile phone addiction.
Sixth, After mutual variables related to mobile phone addiction were checked, multiple regression analysis was conducted along with analyzed variables. According to the stage, another multiple regression analysis was also conducted step by step along with analyzed variables which had significant correlation to mobile phone addiction.
A few limitations, according to the results of this study, were found and put in order as follows.
First, In this study, because it was impossible to classify mobile phone addiction groups in the process of sampling the subjects, it was investigated targeted for the general college students. In subsequent studies, therefore, a systematic study on mobile phone addiction groups based on pathological use of mobile phone is needed.
Second, Difference in the frequency of mobile phone use can be seen depending on the characteristics of college students' major or their region because subjects in this research are only a part of college students who live in Daegu and Gyeongbuk area. So, subdivision and diversification of subjects who participate in the survey are needed.
Third, This study used various factors related to mobile phone addiction already confirmed through the preceding study, For a better study which closely examines relationship to mobile phone addiction, however, subsequent studies which can prove the relationship between personal and social characteristics and various factors associated with mobile phone addiction are requested.
Fourth, mobile phone has already been in use as a useful multimedia device in our daily lives but many problems have been caused due to the excessive use of it. Though this study is limited to college students' mobile phone addiction, I think that more and more studies on game, pornography, SNS addiction, etc. should be required.
Based on these results, a few suggestions for ways to prevent and resolve college students' mobile phone addiction are as follows.
First, Other entertainment features which make sure that college students won't stick to mobile phone are needed.
Second, The majority of college students are accustomed to taking things alone due to fierce competition for entrance examination in their high school lives, spending much time using their mobile phones excessively. In order to prevent mobile phone addiction, a variety of off-line community activities such as social activities and club activities are needed.
Third, Recently many educations and programs on media for young people have been developed steadily because media addiction has constantly been regarded as a social issue but there is little program for college students. To some degree, it is possible to control young people using their mobile phones excessively but it is not easy to regulate college students' because there is no constraint. Now it's time some policies in the universities and local communities to prevent college students from media addiction should be needed.
Finally We need to understand social side-effect on media addiction and have wariness involved in it. In addition, It's thought that multilateral efforts for sound media use from a state and local communities are necessary.
In this research, I have checked some variables related to college students' mobile phone addiction and aimed to find political measures for the prevention of mobile phone addiction.
