Language is important to understand a country. When language is understood not as symbol types, but as symbol systems of the process of communication, it is more easy to appreciate the custom or culture of a society. As a point of view, it is most important to study speech acts for the education of the Korean language.
During last 10 years, the interest in the study of speech acts has elevated. It is the reason that as the phase of Korea is elevated, the study in Korean culture and society is requested. Students to study Korean as the foreign language make a mistake about grammar, meanings and expression of Korean. To study of that mistake, grammatical structures, communication, attitudes of a speaker and listener are considered. Namely, structures of interaction are regarded.
In this study, directives speech acts as the utterance requested the ability of speech acts are considered, which are divided in imperative, recommendation, request, entreaty, suggestion, and proposal speech acts. As analyzing expressed sentence patterns in Korean textbooks of intermediate level, the distribution of directive speech acts is investigated.
In this study, Korean textbooks of the intermediate level frequently used in many university language schools in Korea were analyzed. Because, in Korean textbooks of the novice level many expressions of directive speech acts was used, but was not diversified. However, the result of analyzing those is not different with other researchers. The reason is that Korean textbooks are published for reading, but not for grammar and conversations.
In the result of analyzing, it is confirmed that two or three expressions of speech acts are concentrated among about twenty expression sentence patterns of each speech acts. If expressions of speech acts are determinatively studied, not the social linguistic ability but also the ability to understand the context are expected. Consequentially, speakers who are educated such speech acts bring are the cause that listeners experience misunderstandings and unpleasantness.
In this study, according to analyze Korean textbooks of speech acts, expressive aspects of directive speech acts are looked over and the problems are presented. However, more research is requested because analyzed Korean textbooks are determined and there are a few research results.
