In this thesis, teaching Korean culture through Korean novels for advanced learners is inspected. The advanced learner here can understand and express unfamiliar things about Korean politics, economics, society, and culture. Korean Literature education is considered possible because of the common affective bond on Korean social culture between subjects.
In chapter Ⅰ, the necessity and evidence of teaching culture as a way of teaching Korean are suggested. The objectives are, therefore, to clarity how to choose Korean Literature as a teaching material, how to filter out the culture pattern in the literature, and how to set out the effective learning-teaching model.
In chapter Ⅱ, theoretical exploration on culture and teaching culture in Korean education for foreigners is conducted.
Firstly, the definition of culture in teaching culture is set and the objectives and necessities are presented, with which the appropriateness of using Korean novel is determined. Authoritarianism, the sense of filial piety, and groupism is depicted as features of Korean culture then is verified through historical evidence.
Secondly, the history of Korean teaching-learning theory is studied. The principals of culture teaching and problem-solving model for culture teaching according to constructivism are made.
In chapter Ⅲ, the implement utilized in the Korean culture teaching is investigated, which is done by the theories studied in chapter Ⅱ.
Most of all, each work's historical and geological culture is looked through, then substituted.
Next, the practical teaching plan is made according to the model which use Korean novel as a source for Korean culture teaching by problem-solving method.
The following results could be formed through this study.
Firstly, learning without the culture and the tradition of the target language(Korean) is impossible because of the theory that human behavior inherits through its culture. This, however, doesn't mean that culture education should be prior to language education. Korean teaching for foreigners should be based on the complementary way between language education and culture education, not no the dichotomy of them. Furthermore, one can not neglect the importance of the learners' will to learn and their learning environment.
Secondly, it is likely that novel among other genre can be the most effective tool for Korean teaching to foreigners. Novels reflect not only the era when it was written but the aspect of the target country's culture through the whole history, which is the reason novel is the best tool for teaching a language. Through novels, learners can experience culture, social reality, features of its people, and view points.
In an array of these experiences, learners introspect materialistic egoism of the modern society and obtain the attitude for self-reflection.
Thirdly, authoritarianism, the sense of filial piety, and groupism is depicted as features of Korean culture then is verified through historical evidence. A new milestone is set by applying Korean culture pattern to Korean novel on the basis of these historical evidences.
Fourthly, through searching for diverse learning-teaching theories, it is verified that the novel is the most effective device for the Constructivism Class to teach Korean language. Constructive problem solving model had many advantages to make learners self directing students.
Fifthly, through the selected three novels, learners are made to understand modern and contemporary Korean history and through which they are made to explore Korean history and culture. Also, education methods for geo-culture teaching by novel or Internet are summed up. It is likely that the learners can experience diversly and therefore they can get interests on them.
Sixthly, a practical teaching plan implementing the novel texts is made up according to the theory proved effective here to be applied problem-solving teaching method. A class can be conducted by this constructive teaching plan or can be modified in accordance with the specific situation of the class.
