This aims to find integrated education of Korean as a foreign language by discussing relationship between Korean food culture and education of Korean language, by analyzing vocabularies in food culture in the integrated Korean textbooks, and by analyzing students’ need.
Conversation between a foreign student and a Korean native speaker is basically part of communication between inter-culture. Even when the foreign student’s fluency in Korean language is high, the inter-cultural communication might be hindered by unforeseen problems due to the usage of different languages from the distinction in the linguistic and cultural background. Therefore, the need for integrated education of language and culture arises to reduce errors in communication that might occur among participants in the communication who have various linguistic and cultural background.
To integrate education of language and culture, this layouts method of teaching utilizing vocabularies in food culture. As vocabulary is fundamental ingredient in communication, it is a starting point of speaking, and it is sensitively affected by the culture. Furthermore, food-related culture is one of the most favored areas of study by students. Therefore, this utilized ‘vocabularies in food culture’ in which cultural meanings are incorporated by themselves for integrated teaching/studying of language and culture.
To study the current state of education related to ‘vocabularies in food culture,’ the analysis on the integrated Korean textbooks used in several universities were performed. The result of analysis indicated that most of textbooks do not accomplish integrated education of language and culture in detail. Furthermore, they lack explanation on cultural background or practice session, dealing with ‘vocabularies in food culture’ as mere words and letting the students study for themselves.
The analysis on the students’ need was performed to find method of integrated education of language and culture. To utilize ‘vocabularies in food culture’ in Korean classroom, the analysis on how much students know on the subject, and how strongly they feel to learn about them was performed.
The method of teaching of integrated education of language and culture was given in detail, utilizing the word ‘Kimchi,’ which was the most favored in the analysis on students’ needs. To compose a class, ‘Communicative Language Teaching: CLT’ and ‘Cultural approach’ were used. CLT prioritizes function of communication and the interaction between participants in the conversation. And ‘Cultural approach’ helps to express and understand cultural characteristics of Korean language in the comparative cultural aspect by incorporating it to the teaching method. The two teaching methods complemented each other to improve combined understanding of functional and cultural aspect of language.
