This study examined the aspects of Vietnamese Korean learners’ intonation frequently used in conversation as they have unique aspects of intonation when they speak in Korean. Supposing that the cause of the unique intonation is the interference from the learners’ native language, two languages are contrasted to find out the causes of errors.
Chapter 1 reviews previous studies on Korean intonation both in Korean and Korean as a foreign language to figure out the causes of Vietnamese Korean learners’ unique intonation when they speak in Korean.
Chapter 2 contrasts Korean prosody with that of Vietnamese to find out the causes of Vietnamese Korean learners’ intonational errors. General Korean prosody is reviewed first, and then phonological phrases and intonational phrases, major in Vietnamese, are reviewed. Vietnamese prosody is realized in tone which is not in Korean, thus, this chapter examines the systems of Vietnamese tone and intonation. The height of tones in Vietnamese is connected in realization, the rules of intonation do not need to be learned. Therefore it is natural for Vietnamese Korean learners to make errors when they speak in Korean as they have not taken any education in intonation.
Chapter 3 goes over intonations in phonological phrases and intonational phrases with recordings of Vietnamese Korean learners’ dialogue to analyze their Korean intonation. The result shows that they have a high rate of error in phonological phrases and they have issues in common. They are confused when the intonation varies according to the kind of interrogative sentences in intonational phrase. It seems that this is because they do not recognize that the boundary tones of interrogative sentence vary with respect to the kind of it.
Chapter 4 proposes a method applicable to Korean education based on the error types made by Vietnamese Korean learners. A teaching method is also proposed to let the learners recognize the causes of errors in phonological phrases and intonational phrases. It will help the learners to solve the problem and to realize phonological phrases and intonational phrases properly according to each item.
The studies on intonation in Korean education have not been done compared to other issues, and the teachers have not paid much attention to its needs. It is necessary to be further studies on this field and the Korean learners need to recognize the effectiveness of teaching Korean intonation. The causes of errors in intonation made by Vietnamese Korean learners missing in this study are expected to be done later.
