Verb work Strengthening Treatment(VNeST) is a semantic treatment that aims to improve lexical retrieval of content words in sentence context by promoting systematic retrieval of verbs and their thematic roles. So the current study was to examined the effect of VNeST on Korean individuals with mild to moderate aphasia.
There are four research questions in this study. (a) effect size on trained verb naming. (b) generalization effect on untrained verb naming, (c) noun and verb naming changes on pre - post task, (d) aphasia quotient changes on pre - post task.
Three Korean individuals with aphasia caused by left hemisphere only one lesion stroke participated in this study. This study was performed as follows: (1) confront naming on animation target verb task. (2) generation of three agents or themes for verb. (3) generation of corresponding agents or theme ro complete agent-theme pairs. (4) answer wh-questions about agent-theme pair. (5) semantic judgement of sentence. (6) read the complete sentence.
In this study multiple-baseline approach across participants was used. Effect size were calculated for baseline and maintenance phase responses.
Results demonstrated generalization to lexical retrieval of content words in sentences with trained and untrained verbs across participants. Additionally, pre-post treatment generalization was observed on verb, noun naming and Aphasia Quotient. Although preliminary, these results indicate that VNeST may be effective in promoting generalization from single word naming in person with mild to moderate aphasia. A number of clinical implications related to treatment efficiency are discussed.
