Objective : The aim of this article was to assess the clinical evidence for acupuncture therapies as treatments for soft tissue injuries of the knee joint.
Methods : This systematic review includes randomized clinical trials(RCTs) of acupuncture as a treatment for soft tissue injuries of the knee joint. The search terms were selected according to medical subject heading(MeSH).
Sources: Systematic searches were conducted in 13 electronic databases up to April 2012; PubMed, The Cochrane Library 2012(Issue 4), EMBASE, CINAHL(Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature), PsycINFO, AMED(Allied and Complementary Medicine), six Korean Medical Databases and a Chinese Medical Database.
Results : Total of 674 RCTs were identified. Of these, nine met the eligibility criteria and were critically appraised. These trials suggest acupuncture can be superior to usual care in treating soft tissue injuries of the knee joint. All of nine trials had a high risk of bias.
Conclusions : In conclusion, consistent results show that acupuncture may be effective in symptom management in patients with soft tissue injuries of the knee joint. However, because of the number of eligible RCTs and the high risk of bias in the assessment of the available RCTs, the evidence supporting this conclusion is limited. There is a need for further well designed clinical trials.
