The purpose of this study is to suggest the teaching methods of Korean semi-language communication for foreign learners. The messages expressed and understood in communicative situation, are affected than the verbal communication, nonverbal behavior more significantly. A semi-language element, sub-class of non-verbal communication is an important factor. The semi-language element occupies a greater proportion in communication and it is also important to interpret the meaning. But even though semi-language elements are important in communication, they were not heavily covered in Korean lessons. So this study is aimed to suggest a model of teaching and learning for Korean semi-language communication. Because the situational context is important in teaching and learning of communication, the comic strips were selected as a learning material. The pictures of comic strips that suggest the situational context easily are useful for foreign learners. And for the situations are drawn in the comic strips are similar to the day-to-day life, the learning can be applied to everyday language situations.
As Korean semi-language elements the pitch, intonation, tempo, accent, etc. have been proposed. After explaining the concept of each, the examples are presented that show how these elements cause the meaningful difference.
For the actual configuration of teaching and learning methods of Korean semi-language communication, the communicative language teaching model was applied. In this study focusing on the instructional step of the communicative language teaching model, the methods are composed to lead foreign learner into the successful communication. First of all, the element-specific learning activities were presented for the teaching and learning Korean semi-langue communication. Then activities that incorporate elements were presented.
Through these educational activities, learners' communicative competence can be improved. And I hope this study will provide an opportunity to recognize the importance of semi-language teaching and learning in Korean classes for successful communication. The ultimate goal of language education is to improve learners' communicative competence. So Korean semi-language elements should be taught heavily in the classroom to improve learners' communicative competence.
