The purpose of this study is to compare Korean ‘-eoss-’ with Chinese ‘le’, analysing them from the perspective of tense and aspect.
Chapter Ⅱ deals with general functions on tense and aspect of ‘-eoss-’ and ‘le’. In short, in Korean ‘-eoss-’, the function of tense is more predominant than that of aspect, while the function of aspect being more predominant in Chinese ‘le’ comparatively.
Chapter Ⅲ focuses on functions of tense in Korean ‘-eoss-’ and Chinese ‘le’. Firstly, ‘-eoss-’ is divided into ‘-eoss1-’ as a past tense and ‘-eoss2-’ as a function of ‘im-past’ tense such as future and present. In the meanwhile, ‘le’ is generally said to carry out various functions of tense, but not to be a tense element. That is to say, ‘le1’ as a perfective aspect is used about a past temporality. In addition, corresponding relations between ‘-eoss1-’ and ‘le1’ are closely investigated here.
Chapter Ⅳ mainly explores functions of aspect in Korean ‘-eoss-’ and Chinese ‘le’. First, in the Korean ‘-eoss-’, ‘-eoss2-’ is occupying a main position on the aspect function, while ‘-eoss1-’ carrying out perfective or repetitive aspect like functions. Next, in the Chinese ‘le’, ‘le’ is divided into ‘le1’ as a perfective aspect and ‘le2’ as a ‘change’ aspect. And corresponding relations between ‘-eoss2-’ and ‘le1’/‘le2’ are thoroughly examined here too.
