This study aimed at searching for, focused on consonant assimilation, some methods of pronunciation teaching needed for Chinese students’ fluent communication with Koreans. Since lots of studies on pronunciation such as segmental sounds, structures of syllables, suprasegmental phonemes, and part of phonetic rules were already carried out in Korea inland, this study was attempted to let the situation and data of China proper applied to.
In chapter 2, the Chinese language, an isolating language, was phonetically compared with the Korean language, an agglutinative language. The systems of phonemes and the structures of syllables were compared with each other, after the rules of phonemes were arranged respectively.
In chapter 3, some questionnaires on consonant assimilations were made up, with which we could grasp the realities of errors both in Korea and Chinese proper, summarizing and analyzing them. Various errors were revealed in the nasalization of obstruents and liquids, liquidification, palatalization, and fortisfication. That was considered to result from the interference of students’ mother tongue, the Chinese language and the lack of learning systematic pronunciation of the Korean language.
In chapter 4, some plans of pronunciation education for Chinese students were presented. The point of the plans based on a phonetic contrast and learners’ errors between the two languages was that we should thoroughly deal with general details of Korean pronunciation in advance and then treat the errors resulting from the phonetic differences between them.
This study did not propose a scheme of pronunciation education for every phonetic rule. Four kinds of phonetic rules were examined but more specific researches should be turned over to the next further study.
