Korean students who learn English as a second language experience much difficulty with articles which do not exist in the Korean language, and as articles are not emphasized as much as the other grammatical elements in English lessons, students don't seem to perceive their importance and use even though they encounter them frequently.
In this light, this thesis is designed to figure out issues with the lesson on articles in current English education and discuss methods for effectively teaching leaners about articles.
This study describes major functions of articles on their theoretical basis and then treats the lesson on articles in the middle-school English education with related issues.
From a measurement of students' ability to use articles, the study has come to see that their acquired knowledge on indefinite articles and no-article usage remains low and that this happens because the countability of English nouns is not regular. The 2nd and 3rd graders in Korean middle school show excessive use of definite articles while most of them are observed using articles unknowledgeably.
This study attributes the overall poor ability to handle articles to the lesson that focuses on their partial usage and lets students receive it with no critical reasoning, so it emphasizes the importance of nurturing a learner's ability to actively create and use articles.
To address the issues, the study suggests not placing usual importance on the lesson articles and breaking out of the previous instruction method that uniformly has students memorize the functions of articles and focusing on various types of paragraphs and writing that weight speaker and listener's thought process, use of statements, and active class participation. It also stresses class with feedback and presents its related methods.
Experimental classes have demonstrated that the suggested method helps students improve their ability to use articles. And through an analysis of the usage of articles and related errors, the study discusses in what issues students experience difficulty and how they can be addressed.
Such results of the study suggest that a teacher should lead a class by encouraging activities and participation through a work on various teaching materials.
While the study finds it tough for both the learner and the teacher to perfectly learn and use articles, it stresses that methods are available for creating positive effects and that a teacher should continue his or her exploration to provide learners with various contents.
