The purpose of this study was to investigate what the differences and similarities are in the rhetorical organization of methods sections of Korean thesis written by native Korean speakers and Korean learners on the basis of Bitchener's (2010) methods model with one additional move as 'pilot study of data collection procedure' and whether this Bitchener/1 model can be applied to a genre analysis of methods sections of Korean theses. Also, this study finds formulaic languages of moves which show movement of each move and step.
68 Korean master's theses which display IMRD structures were selected in the field of Teaching Korean as a Foreign Language: 50 theses written by native Korean speakers and 18 theses written by Korean learners. To validate reliability, 2 raters were trained Bitchener (2010) model and discussed any disagreements, which resulted in satisfactory level of inter-rater agreement of Cohen's Kappa 1.
The findings of this study were as follows. First the Bitchener/1 model didn't confirm to the methods sections in Korean theses. This result showed the impossibility of application of the Bitchener/1 model to methods sections in Korean theses. And since most Korean researchers wrote methods sections according to convention of dividing the methods sections of their thesis into several sub-sections, methods sections did not follow an exact sequence of Bitchener's model. Based on the result, this study presented a generalized model of methods in Korean theses.
Second, for the rhetorical organization, the differences between native Koreans and Korean learners were not found. But as for the Korean learners, the frequency of move 2- step d and move 3- step b were lower than that of native Koreans.
Third, based on the analysis result, this study presented formulaic language of methods sections in Korean theses.
The purpose of this study was to identify the structure in methods sections of Korean theses and to provide the raw materials that can be utilized in the teaching of Korean writing for academic purposes.
