The purpose of this study is not only to examine and analyze Korean university’s library service for their international students, but also to provide possible solution for encouraging the number of international library users based on this study.
The survey was generated through five steps in order to fulfill above-mentioned purpose of this study.
First, according to Ministry Of Education, Science And Technology, a research about the present condition, planning and future development for international students was developed with their particular data and information.
Second, initial investigation was enhanced based on the advanced research and diverse ranges of national/international literature in order to identify the realities of related issues.
Third, additional research was conducted by questionnaire and group interview about library materials, reference service, and e-mail service for international students.
Fourth, there were 4 different universities that present excellent service with more than 2,000 international students was selected for doing survey on library satisfaction. 200 students participated on this survey (50 students per each school). Additionally, SPSS 18.0 analyzed those data.
Finally, there was an interview with library service department in the terms of survey on the level of library service satisfaction. With these final data and interview, it is investigated that several drawbacks of foreigners using library in university, and also considered possible solutions in library services for international students.
Therefore, library service in university for their international students can be progressed with the help of completed survey and analysis as follows.
First, this study reveled that most of international students gave excellent satisfaction on high-quality facility and personal service of library. Meanwhile, how the digital information is used for their students and the recognition of its digital data was at poor.
Second, the result was compared with different universities in the satisfaction of using library. In detail, universities with so many Chinese students had a high demand for multi-language library web-site or library guideline. However, universities with high number of engineering or post-graduate students hit large proportion about academic information and references.
Third, as compared to students’ nationalities, more Asian responded lower satisfaction on the library service than those students who are from the other parts of the world, especially in regards to the accessibility, rules and regulations, multi-language web-site. That is, the survey explained that it might relate to how far they are comfortable with using English language.
Fourth, there was a remarkable difference depending on the educational background. Survey found that more post-graduate students feel good about using library than under graduate students, particularly in university’s staff, on-line research source and also high-tech machinery.
Fifth, it was more interesting results revealed with the survey that classified by different major. Engineering students answered more as excellence in usage of computer and machinery, compared to the students of the social and human sciences and business. In detail, engineering students showed a low percentage of satisfaction in the on-line research source category, therefore it is expected that these students are more concerned about up-to-date resources and easier to access with international news and information. As a result, it is recommnended to provide international students with better quality service by recognizing serious needs of education for using library efficiently.
Sixth, the survey noticed that there was no coincident between the level of Korean ability and satisfaction of using library.
Lastly, analysis of this survey revealed that more often visiting library users showed a great satisfaction in terms of staff kindness and information searching environment, but not about the rules and regulation.
Findings suggest that there are 7 methods to improve of university library usage and improve user satisfaction for international students.
