Referential expressions seem simple superficially while they can be very complicated. Especially because there are great differences in the syntactic characteristics and usage of referential expressions between Korean and Chinese, both Chinese Korean learners and Korean Chinese learners have difficulty in mastering it. Therefore, this will focus on this by carrying out the comparative analysis of the characteristics and the differences of the referential expressions.
The comparative researches of referential expressions between Korean and Chinese have been investigated. The researches focus on the function of the demonstrative pronouns in both Korean in which the demonstrative pronouns are ‘이, 그, 저’ and Chinese in which they are '这,那'. However, by comparing with different kinds of meaning of it, the referential expressions between Korean and Chinese still have many differences in specific aspects.
This will begin with the comparative analysis of the syntactic characteristics of the referential expressions that have the same meaning in both Korean and Chinese. In chapter two, it will focus on the classification of the referential expressions of two languages according to two criteria which are spatial classification and semantic classification. According to the spatial classification, the referential expressions can be classified into ‘이, 그, 저' in Korean while they can be classified into ‘这,那' in Chinese. According to the semantic classification, it can be classified into four kinds of meaning which are object, location, time, and status in both Korean and Chinese. Furthermore, this will look into the syntactic characteristics of the referential expressions of both countries. Chinese referential expressions are all demonstrative pronouns while Korean referential expressions are pronouns, nouns or adverbs. It is revealed that the Korean referential expressions still have great differences with the Chinese ones.
In chapter three, dividing the referential expressions into four kinds which are object, location, time and status, it will focus on the special usage of the referential expressions of both languages and the differences of usage of them according to their syntactic characteristics. The usage of acting as a pronoun is the most similar function in referential expressions of both languages. The special usage of Chinese referential expressions has many differences with that of the Korean ones. Through this research, the differences of referential expressions between Korean and Chinese have been investigated and revealed. It is of great significance for the translation between these two languages. It also helps the learners who are learning Korean or Chinese master the referential expressions.
