The purpose of this study is to contrast ergative verbs in the four languages(Korean, English, Japanese, Chinese) and try to find out if there is some universality focused on ‘lexical ergativity’.
Typologically, Korean can be classified into a nominative-accusative language. However Korean, nominative-accusative language, has some features of ergative-absolutive languages. Expecially Korean mainly shows ‘lexical ergativity’ which constructs intransitive and transitive sentences at the same time by a certain verb. Therefore an ergative verb is really important in Korean.
And people who can be a target of Korean education are foreigners. So contrasting languages is really important work because we can discover similarities and differences between their mother language and Korean and apply them to teaching Korean for effective Korean learning.
Chapter 2 is concerned with the concept of ergativity related to typology and suggests criteria of an ergative verb in this study.
And Chapter 3 contrasts chosen verbs translated in three languages(English, Japanese, Chinese) and Korean ergative verbs.
Then chapter 4 analyzes and interprets the types and patterns of ergative verbs in four languages.
This discussion has significances in that this suggests types of verbs for foreign students and they can utilize them for learning Korean from the perspective of Korean language education.
But this study is a result of my decision based on dictionaries. To make up this, a collaborating work with speakers of mother languages(English, Japanese, Chinese) is needed in choosing translated words and examples.
