Teaching Spoken Korean through TV Drama

This thesis focuses on Korean speaking education using TV drama for advanced university students majoring in Korean language in China.
These students can reach the advanced level on the Test Of Proficiency In Korean(TOPIK), but still do not have high speaking skills in Korean. Compared with Chinese students who are studying in Korea, these students are less exposed to a “real-life” Korean language environment. To remedy this type of limited exposure in the language environment, in my thesis, I propose teaching using TV drama as a solution. The dramas satisfy multiple needs, especially focused on aspects of spoken language.
This thesis surveyed 57 students at 20 different Chinese universities, testing their ability in speaking. Based on the survey results, my thesis establishes advanced Korean teaching aims, extracts the teaching items, sets up a standard of TV drama which could be used for advanced spoken Korean teaching, and builds a model for a teaching course. Based on this model, I use the TV drama My Princess as an example to make a practical syllabus.
