This study deals with the phenomenon of retranslation as observed in translations of Spanish novels into Korean.
There exist various reasons as to why a literary work, already introduced in a culture through translation, is translated again into the same target language. Likewise, there are various views for analyzing this occurrence of retranslation in the field of translation studies. According to the "Retranslation Hypothesis" of the 1990s, the reasons for retranslations are 1) deficiencies of the initial translations, and 2) "aging" of translated text due to the passing of time. On the other hand, ever since the 2000s, more than the issues related to the source text (ST) and the target text (TT) per se, it has been the changes in the target culture environment that have often been given as the reasons for retranslation. With this backdrop, as one of the reasons for retranslations of Spanish novels in Korean publication market, this study focuses on "indirect translation", denoting translation not from an original ST but via a mediated translation in another language.
Examining how Spanish novels have been received in Korean by period, it was revealed that Spanish novels were initially introduced into Korea through indirect translation via mediating languages such as English or Japanese. This changed from the mid-1990s when direct Korean translations from Spanish source texts began to appear. The fact that Spanish novels were first introduced into Korea through indirect translation which is generally not approved of since accurate transfer of meaning of the original ST is diminished, is relevant to the status of Spanish novels in Korea's literary translation system and the cultural distance. This may have acted as a strong motivation towards retranslations directly from the Spanish ST ever since then.
In order to analyze the retranslation phenomenon, this study begins by looking at the characteristics of Korean translations of Spanish novels by period from the perspective of Korean literary translation history. Diachronic distribution of Spanish novel translations, with a focus on directness or indirectness of translation, shows the background and reasons for the initial introduction of Spanish novels through indirect translation and subsequent retranslations via direct translation. As a specific case for analysis, One Hundred Years of Solitude (Cien Años de Soledad) by a Colombian writer, Gabriel García Márquez was chosen.
The case analysis was conducted in two stages; 1) the macro aspect of distribution of its translations in the Korean publication market, 2) the micro aspect of target text analysis. In analyzing overall distribution of translations from the first translation to the most recent ones, the TTs were examined in terms of the time of translation, translator, publisher, and direct/indirectness of translation, followed by their classification in terms of retranslation, reprint, and re-edition. In the text analysis, initial indirect translations with English as mediating language and the later direct translations from Spanish ST into Korean were observed focusing on how culture specific terms were translated.
The significance of this study is that it suggests an integrated view on how Spanish and Latin American novels were translated and introduced into Korea, by analyzing the existing academic material. Also, while the previous approach on indirect translation centered on prescriptive assessment of identifying errors, this study conducts analysis from the perspective of literary translation system of the target culture, and analyzes textual shifts rising from indirect translation procedures. In particular, the analysis of specific types of cultural transfer and the translation strategies observed in Spanish-Korean literary translations can be applied to professional translation practice and translator education.
