The purpose of this study is to clarify which function the tense in Korean does in the actual text. This starts from observation as saying that the tense is used with the aim of text beyond the time reference function. For discussion, it first presented tense in Korean as 3-part system in past, present and future. The following three approaches support this assertion. First, as a result of examining in the typological aspect, the problem of establishing the future tense could be explained in the language universal position. Second, through the structural consideration, the problem about position of tense marker could be explained. This discussion had the Role and Reference Grammar as the theoretical background. Third, the multi-functionality of the tense marker was described with Langacker(1991)'s concept of 'subjectification.' The tense marker indicates diverse meanings while the future tense exists as an archetype meaning in which a speaker isn't involved, and is being made an aspect if a speaker is involved here.
This study progressed discussion with seeing the present tense as the centripetal tense of forming the tense system. The semantic feature in tense was elicited by re-considering a meaning of each tense. In sequence, it examined which function this semantic feature gives to tense by taking an example of actual data. The semantic features in the present tense include simultaneity, superiority, constancy, determinacy, continuity, progressiveness, and repeatability. These semantic features are combined independently or by over 2 pieces, thereby manifesting the function of delivering simultaneous situation, the function of generalization, the function of making a fact, and the function of increasing a sense of field. The semantic features in the past tense include previous time characteristic, completeness, irreversibility, and substantiality. These things make it available for having the function of ing the previous situation and the function of making it as the accomplished fact. The semantic features in the future tense include later time characteristic, non-substantiality, inferrable characteristic, indeterminacy, intentionality, and reversible property. These things become the features of manifesting the function of offering the late information, the function of planning, the function of estimating, and function of being polite.
Chapter 4 verified how these things are indicated in actual text. First of all, the text was divided according to main-case tense. The present text was taken a welcoming address, the written sermon, and a statement. The past text was taken a book , petition, and a written protest(shopping mall). The future text was taken the written weather forecast, election advertising, and a study plan. The hypotheses for verifying tense function are as follows. ① The present(past/future) tense will be primarily used in the text whose main-case time is the present(past/future) sphere. ② There will be any reason strategically when having used other tense, not the corresponding tense. ③ A strategy will be developed with a method of effectively delivering a speaker's intention. As a result of verification, it was effective on the present and past tense, but wasn't so in the future tense. Its reason can be taken the possibility of error in selecting text, and a point of having overlooked a fact that the future tense marker is actually shown more in spoken language than written language.
