The aims to improve the oral Korean of Chinese learners of Korean language at intermediate level by diversified and interesting teaching approaches. My previous study shows that story-telling is mostly centered around teachers in the class of Korean language education and, looking from the perspective of students, it is seldom focused on students and not applied flexibly enough. Considering the general lack of capability for making discourses among Chinese intermediate-level Korean learners, the comes up with an oral Korean-teaching and learning method in an enjoyable environment without burden, which combines Korean fairy stories with storytelling skill.
The presents a three-phase teaching process consisting of pre-storytelling, mid-storytelling and post-storytelling, which is designed to improve the spoken Korean. In this way, learners actively participate in the teaching process which shows obvious results in improving their spoken Korean and serves as a specific teaching plan. It helps them understand the necessity and significance of spoken Korean education.
The storytelling method does not only contribute to the improvement of oral Korean, but also help remember longer and more, compared with the teaching method centered around teachers. The method involves many activities related to spoken language through which learners may speak out their feelings and ideas, contributive to raising expression fluency. Thus, the storytelling method is of great importance in spoken Korean education.
But the suggests a 100-minute session to improve spoken Korean language. It might fail to realize the desired result within such a short time. In addition, the result of this teaching method may vary from person to person depending on the actual process of different teachers, duration and preparation.
The explores the teaching method of storytelling by using Korean well-known fairy tale ‘Hyonyeo Shim Cheong’ as material and giving focus on learners, demonstrating a specific teaching plan for enhancing the proficiency of speaking Korean language. Through diversified activities, repetitive listening and speaking, Chinese intermediate-level Korean learners seek to improve proficiency in speaking Korean language. The storytelling teaching method is important in transforming the spoken Korean education method. Thus it is our wish that the storytelling method could be applied in future teaching of spoken Korean language.
