As digital technologies including the Internet have emerged in all across society since the late 1990s, a lot of industrial changes are taking place. Changes brought by introduction of digital technologies have made great impacts on the music industry, and emergence of digital technologies such as the high-speed Internet and MP3 has turned the music market into the digital marketing moving from the existing offline record market to the online and mobile market since 2000. Under these circumstances, this studies changes in the music industry that has gone through dramatic changes due to digitalization.
This study conducted a case study of the domestic music industry and a bibliometric analysis over 269 domestic academic journals published from 1967 to 2010 with a search word of the music industry by using KrKwic (Hanwoo Park ∙ Leydesdorff, 2003), a program to analyze Korean as a language, in order to identify study trends in the domestic industry that is developing industrially.
As important as academic research done by scholars are government policies for the age of peace in the music industry. Since a virtuous cycle where research results from scholars make a positive effect on government policies and the other way around is a requirement for development of the music industry, this study compared policies on the music industry focusing on ?White Paper of Cultural Industries? released by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism from 2000 to 2010. It turned out the government supported the industry from three perspectives; stimulating the domestic music market, supporting to explore overseas market and building infrastructure related to the music industry. The government tried to secure diversity by supporting creative activities in order to stimulate the domestic music market. It also set thorough policies to modify the copyright so that outstanding culture can be exported overseas. Lastly, it formulated a policy of building infrastructure for the music industry?s database for implementation.
Analysis results of the study trends in the music industry show that the number of academic journals related to the industry is increasing every year. This study looked at the current status in how many s are presented by academic society. It was found that many academic societies such as Association for Broadcasting & Telecommunication Studies and The Korea Contents Association out of 116 academic societies were actively carrying out studies related to the music industry. Research into 212 s classified by KDC demonstrated that there are 50 s related to economics, 14 for education and 14 for electric engineering and electronic engineering (560).
This study took a look at study trends in detail in the music industry by area, by region and by distribution based on 177 s with abstracts selected out of 269 s to analyze study trends in the music industry.
First, analysis results of study trends by area show that hybrid study between ?the music industry? and ?online music distribution? stands out and ?music performance industry? has correlation with ?record production industry?.
Second, analysis results by region demonstrates that words related to ?domestic? came up most frequently and studies related to ?Asia? were carried out the most.
Third, analysis results by distribution show that ?online market? was studied the most followed by ?record market? and ?performance market?. In distribution in the music industry that had focused on the existing record market since 2000, words related to ?online market? emerged significantly due to spread of the Internet and digital technologies, which tells us studies on ?online market? in the music industry are becoming important.
From industrial perspective, this study looks at study trends in the industry and provides new ways to study necessary to operate the music industry more effectively.
However, there were the following limitations. Search results in the analysis came out by word and phrase. But, there wasn't a clear distinction between compound nouns and non-compound nouns a different researcher depending on a researcher. As a result, even the same word was classified differently. Titles of s were analyzed and it is difficult to say the title can represent the overall study area.
Since terms related to the music industry were analyzed, it was difficult to build a classification system and the music industry has a lot of limitations from industrial perspective. However, this study has a purpose of reviewing overall trends in that the music industry is developing as a study, looking at trends in study areas and finding out their relations. Furthermore, it is hoped that systematic study is done in order for the domestic music industry to grow actively not only domestically but globally.
