This study aims at organizing the discourse functions of ‛-inde', the Korean connective ending, with the discourse corpus. ‛-inde' is one of the major grammar items in learning the Korean connective endings. Thus it is needed to know the usage of ‛-inde' exactly. However the form of ‛-inde' varies depending on the words it is joined with, while multiple relationships exist with preceding and escorting clauses, so learners and teachers encounter difficulties in learning and teaching it. Therefore learners make many mistakes in using it. This study explores the useful teaching information and method of ‛-inde'.
First of all, this study founds out the reason the '-inde' has various meanings and classified the meanings of '-inde' into [explanation], [contrast], [reason], [concession], and [situation for time]. Futhermore it provided syntactic functions of '-inde' according to each meaning.
In addition, this study considered the necessity of discourse function's education of '-inde'. '-inde' is used more frequently in spoken language than written language and it means that speaker's contents and spoken forms are influenced by discourse situations. And learners can apply the grammatical knowledge which learners have studied in a classroom to in actual language situation naturally. For those reasons, the discourse function's education of '-inde' is necessary.
Based on the discussion above, this study analyzed the discourse functions of '-inde' with the discourse corpus. The discourse functions of '-inde' are as follows: to suggest a topic, to change into a new topic, to return to the original topic, to link the topics, to provide grounds of an opinion, to provide grounds of asking an agreement, to provide grounds of asking an action, to provide grounds of asking back and to euphemize speaker' intention.
And in order to investigate how '-inde' is presented in the current education of Korean, this study analyzed the current Korean language textbooks. Most of Korean language textbooks focuses on the syntactic and semantic explanation of '-inde' without the discourse functions. Also each textbook presents different meanings and grammar explanations, and many of the presented examples are not proper. They do not mention the practice and task of '-inde' considering the discourse situations. It is confirmed that Korean education overlooks the importance of the discourse functions of '-inde'.
Therefore this study presented the useful teaching information and methods of '-inde' it can be helpful and practical for Korean education. First of all, it proposed the list of a hierarchy of '-inde' by its meanings. The result of it is as follows: [explanation]➞[contrast]➞[reason]➞[concession]➞[situation for time].
This study is significant on that it is provided the educational information of semantics, syntax, discourse of '-inde' which can be applicable in Korean education.
